Upper Deck is set to release 9 new football variants over the next two months. Brett Favre, Ben Roethlisberger and Tom Brady were some of the first athletes released from the All-Star Vinyl line. The variants will include a Black Edition, an Away Jersey Edition and a Retro Jersey Edition. Both the Favre and Brady figures will include helmets, which the original release lacked. Since Big Ben is wearing a reversed cap, it would be tough to get a helmet over that.
The following release dates are for Platinum Club members and the General Public:
Favre: PC - September 4th GP - September 5th (9:04 AM PST) Roethlisberger: PC - September 12th GP - September 13th (9:07 AM PST) Brady: PC - October 1st GP - October 2nd (9:12 AM PST)

The most exciting player in the NFL is being immortalized as an All-Star Vinyl figure. Yes...that's Reggie Bush in his black and gold New Orleans Saints jersey. The figure will be released in October, with Ladanian Tomlinson (November), Brian Urlacher (December) and Peyton Manning (January). Are you ready for some football?
There really hasn't been a groundbreaking documentary about the designer toy scene. We need our own version of Style Wars. Toys Are Us: A Revolution in Plastic is out to show the world about the hobby...the addiction...the religion that we practice. Brian Stillman and X-Ray Films have put together a short film that is helpful for newbies, as well as being fun and informative for designer vinyl veterans.
The DVD, which runs about 25 minutes, has interview segments with artists such as: Brian Flynn, Kano, Frank Kozik, Patrick Ma, Mars-1, Tara McPherson, Mark Nagata, J Neth, Jermaine Rogers, Erick Scarecrow and Voltaire. Not only are the artists represented, but some of the more intense collectors show off their crazy collections.
Toys Are Us is a must-see if you're new to the designer toy realm. If I was teaching Designer Toys 101...I'd play this DVD and then give you kids a little pop quiz. And for all of you who've been "in the game" since way back in the early 2000's...you'll enjoy hearing the opinions of many of the artists who were interviewed.
There are even a few extras on the DVD. You can listen to the music that was sampled throughout the film, but I'd recommend watching some of the extended interviews.
You can pick up Toys Are Us: A Revolution in Plastic DVD for $19.95 from Film Baby. If you're interested in stocking them for your shop, contact DKE Toys for wholesale inquiries. And the DVD is Region 0 and NTSC, so it should be playable anywhere in the world.
Those cuddly Shawnimals are going to be converted into not so cuddly video game form. A game revolving around Shawn Smith's Ninjatown will be released on Nintendo DS in the fall of 2008. They're working with SouthPeak Games and Venan Entertainment in conjunction with Cashmere Productions on the title, which is described below.
A diverse group of fun-loving Ninjas populate the vibrant yet peaceful
place known as Ninjatown. However, after the eruption of a nearby
volcano, Ninjatown is attacked by hordes of sinister enemies lead by
Mr. Demon, who, for reasons unknown, is bent on destruction. It is now
time to use each of the Ninjas’ unique skills and powers – including
the Mighty Wind of Ninja Dropping and Stealth Hugs – to fight off the
evil and secure Ninjatown, one district at a time. The game is played
from the top down, where the player uses the stylus to strategically
place Ninjas to defend each area. The action is non-stop!
If you're in Louisville, Kentucky near the end of next month (September 21st to be exact) be sure to stop by Ultra Pop! for the Gary Baseman signing event. They'll have approximately 10 Blue Hot Cha Cha Chas on hand as well as Baseman's new A Taste of Venison book.
Daniel Barojas is a US based artist who is originally from Mexico City. "Peyoterrific Bart" celebrates the Huichol indigenous tribe of Mexico and their love for earth & the ideals they represent. It's made by laying a layer of wax on the figure and then painstakingly lying down string and/or beads on top of that. Great work!
If you weren't one of the lucky 100 people who picked up the Spider-Man polyresin figure from Upper Deck, be sure to wait by the computer tomorrow. The SubCasts line combines the characters from Marvel Comics with the stylings of miQ Willmott and TWEEQiM. The limited edition of 2,000 pieces will be made available tomorrow (Tuesday August 28th) at 9:00AM PST through the SubCasts website.
Jared Deal, of Carnival Cartoons, has sent us some photos of a piece he did for the upcoming group show at Monkeyhouse Toys. His Hungry Like the Wolf design probably isn't what Duran Duran was thinking about...it's a little more reminiscent of Jason Bateman in Teen Wolf Too.
David Horvath broke news of Sun-Min'sSpider Baby Boom line of plushies. Yes...his blog is great for things like breaking news (and to read David's random thoughts). Check out below for all of the different designs. Boy...when those spiders have babies, they really have babies.
