Background

Patch Together is the website that gives everyone the opportunity of being a toy designer.  Cartoonist Ralph Ferres and German designer VISEone teamed up with Patch Together to release their limited edition Sea Hunter (On Demand) resin figure.

This is a dragon who lives in the near of a big ocean. Twice a day he flies over the water to watch if he could catch a meal. Whenever he sees a poor tuna - it's his.

Packaging

The packaging for this figure is somewhat nondescript. Since it’s an extremely small run figure, they didn’t shell out money for packaging design.  It’s a simple box with printed out sheets glued to the front and back. Those sheets feature artwork that the resin was based on.  On the inside, the figure is packaged in dual Styrofoam trays.

The Figure

The Sea Hunter (On Demand) figure stands approximately 8” in height and has no articulation.  The resin statue includes a detachable base (signed on the underside by the artists), although there’s really no reason to remove these two from each other.  The piece is painted in various shades of blue, with white claws and eyes.

Since the Sea Hunter is an On Demand figure, it is only limited to a small run of 50 numbered pieces.  The figure also includes a postcard the features artwork of the character and the number of the edition that you have.

Our Opinion

I like what Patch Together is doing here.  It’s usually difficult to find a figure in such a small run (only 50).  A lot of the time, you can find a specific colorway in only 50 pieces, but rarely an entire design’s run.

So, I completely understand why they didn’t put extra money into a fancy exterior.  The box would have just been thrown somewhere anyway…since this is a displayable statuette.  So they saved collectors a little extra cash by not going all out for production-grade packaging.

The actual Sea Hunter resin piece is fairly well done.  I had a few issues with paint on the base chipping, but I actually sanded the entire thing and repainted it black.  That might annoy some folks, but I actually enjoyed it.

I think the sculptors did a decent job bringing the character to life.  The Sea Hunter character reminds me of Elliott from the Disney film – Pete’s Dragon.  I know I can’t be the only person who loved that movie as a kid.

Overall, it’s an interesting character with a well done sculpt (with all of the knees and elbows and claws).
