Background

Patch Together is the toy design competition website that brings together artists from different backgrounds and with varying abilities.  These artists submit their toy designs and then compete to win a shot at having their characters turned into vinyl (or resin) goodness.

The first production piece from Patch Together is the Yeti Guy.  Designed by the London-based artist Nevermore, the Yeti Guy (and Girl) has been released in 3 colorways: brown, white and pink.  This design was the winner of the April ’08 competition.

Packaging

Each of the Yeti colorways is contained within its very own specialized packaging.  The outer box design includes an illustration of the figure on the front panel, a background scene specific to that character and a background story on the rear panel.  Inside, the piece is contained within interlocking dual plastic trays.

The Figures

The Yeti Guy set includes 3 different colorways: Yeti Guy – Woodland Edition (brown); Yeti Guy – Abominable Edition (white); Yeti Girl – Spare Rib Edition (pink).  The rotocast vinyl figures stand approximately 5” in height and have 2 points of articulation (shoulders).

While most figures have similarly sculpted arms, the Yeti’s right arm (if you’re looking at him) is slightly further from its’ body.  Also, the fists are turned in different directions.  The Yeti Guys both have blood on their teeth, while the Yeti Girl looks to have a cavity (maybe?) and is wearing a bow.

Each colorway is limited to a run of 300 pieces.

Our Opinion

I’ll admit that when I first saw the Patch Together site, I was a little skeptical.   I thought either this was going to be a scam (maybe a big toy company trying to get into the vinyl game) or it was an amazingly cool idea.  Luckily for collectors and artists, it’s the latter.  Patch Together gives any artist the chance of getting his or her characters turned into a toy.

So let’s look at the Yeti Guy.  We can’t have too many Yeti and/or Sasquatch figures.  But this one is a little different from others out there.  The focus of this figure is its’ teeth.  The eyes are simple white circles; the Yeti Girl does have eyelashes.  And the Abominable Edition is the only of the three that has a different color face and hands.  But it's those bloody choppers that draw your gaze.

While the Abominable Edition is my personal favorite of the trio, the other two are also fun designs.  A brown Yeti that looks like a Sasquatch?  Hmm…is that even possible?
