Background

Shaun of the Dead is the British zombie comedy that was released back in 2004.  The film stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as two roommates – Shaun and Ed – that are looking for direction in life.

From Wikipedia:

The plot focuses on Shaun, a young man who is attempting to get some kind of focus in his life as he reconciles with his ex-girlfriend and settles his various issues with his mother and stepfather. At the same time he has to cope with an apocalyptic uprising of zombies that is destroying society - but to whose beginnings he is totally oblivious during the first third of the movie.

Several months back, Sideshow Collectibles released Shaun and Ed as 1:6 scale figures (Regular and Sideshow Exclusive editions).

Packaging

Both the Shaun and Ed figures use the same box with a sticker to denote which figure is inside.  The packaging is the traditional Sideshow 1:6 scale box.  It has a Velcro-held front flap, with a window panel inside.  There are photos of the figures, a few from the film and plenty of reading on the outer packaging.  The inner packaging is a simple plastic tray.

The Figures

The Shaun and Ed 1:6 scale figures are approximately 12” tall and have over 30 points of articulation.  The figures are authentic likenesses of the actors who played them in Shaun of the Dead: Nick Frost (Ed) and Simon Pegg (Shaun).

Our Opinion

I’m a huge fan of Shaun of the Dead.  It’s a hilarious take on all of the horror-based zombie flicks.  If you’ve not yet seen the movie, you definitely need to check it out.  So being a fan of the film, I was glad to see that Sideshow was going to produce 1:6 scale figures based on the license.

Shaun’s head sculpt is slightly better than Ed’s.  They both have a little bit of a glossy look to them, but I think Shaun’s is a spot-on Simon Pegg...while there's Ed's lips need extending.  The number of accessories is more than enough, but it would have been great to see Shaun come with The Winchester (the gun, that is).

The main issue I have is the clothing.  Ed’s fat suit doesn’t really mimic the way a human body looks.  It makes his chest, stomach and back all puff out.  And rather than being a t-shirt (as it was in the film), his shirt is a mock turtleneck.  Shaun’s is slightly better, but there is an issue with the collar on his shirt staying down and the fact that the pockets look enormous.

With that being said, they are still the best Shaun of the Dead figures available.  That might be why all but the Exclusive Edition Ed are Wait Listed on Sideshow’s website.
