Background

Patch Together and artist David Willis have been teaming up to produce resin statuettes based on the various characters from David's webcomic – Shortpacked! We first saw Amber O'Malley and the Robin DeSanto figure is currently in production. But for this review, we're going to look at the middle child – Mike Warner.

Mike is just a jerk. Claim anything else, and you're reaching. The only time he ever says anything helpful is if it depresses you. And he has made a pretty fine career of saying just the right truthful things just to blow your mind. He's got an embarrassing secret, though, and Amber, after discovering it, is extorting boyfriendship out of him to keep it that way.

Our Opinion

Either Patch Together has a deal in place to produce characters from a pair of webcomics – Shortpacked! and Wapsi Square – or their online readership does an amazing job voting and pre-ordering. The Mike Warner figure is the second of three characters from the Shortpacked! series to be released – Amber O'Malley and Robin DeSanto.

I am guessing that unless you're a fan of Shortpacked!, you probably would feel no connection to this character. It's really just a guy with weird hair who looks angry. But readers of the webcomic must obviously be big fans.

The sculpt gets the character's pose correctly. The hair is a little difficult to recreate, but the folks at Patch Together did an admirable job. There are a few paint minor issues, mainly involving the hair. For instance, some of the sculpted areas didn't get filled in, and you can see some greens splotches on the front section of hair.

The resin figure comes attached to a simple black base. It's oval in shape and should the one attached to the Amber O'Malley Shortpacked! figure.

Unfortunately for collectors, the Mike Warner figure is currently out of stock. But if enough people click on the “I Want This Restocked” button, I'm guessing that Patch Together might be swayed to produce a few more resin figures.

OVERALL: Readers of the Shortpacked! webcomic obviously loved this figure (the run sold out). But I'm not sure the ordinary looking character will make the average collector, unaware of Shortpacked!, want to purchase the resin piece. Still, I think it's great that an indie webcomic is able to get its characters produced in a toy series.

You can pick one up at the following:
