REVIEW: Sideshow’s 1:6 Scale Snake Eyes
In his early military career, Snake Eyes proved himself time and again in combat, most notably during the rescue of his allies, wherein he sustained injuries to his face and vocal cords, costing him his voice. Donning a mask and face shield only added to the mystery of this silent soldier, known by many of his peers as "Classified." Later in life he would find himself fighting side by side with very the soldiers that he saved, as a member of America's Elite Fighting Force, G.I. Joe.
And Sideshow Collectibles – in conjuncture with Hasbro – made Snake Eyes the first character released from their G.I. Joe line of 1:6 scale figures.
For their G.I. Joe line, Sideshow chose a packaging design similar to their Star Wars figures. It features two trays – one for the figure and one for accessories – as well as a front flap that locks into place using magnets.
The inner panels feature a list of accessories as well as the full background story from above. All four exterior panels have photos of the figure. The sides have the classic G.I. Joe explosions behind the figure, while the back panel has the cutout info card.
The Snake Eyes 12” tall figure features Sideshow’s Prometheus body with over 30 points of articulation. Along with a display base that features the G.I. Joe logo, this figure includes what might be the most extras ever.
Outfit includes: Special Ops Light Assault Vest; SPIE Rig Harness and Pistol Belt; Two Pairs of Tactical Boots with Straight and Bent Toes; Special Ops Wrist Bands; Three Sets of Interchangeable Gloved Hands; Knee Pads; Pouches for Magazine and Grenades.
Accessories include: Ninjato sword (w/scabbard); Tanto knife (w/boot tie); Falchion sword; 9mm Sub-Machine Gun w/silencer, sling, carabineer and 4 magazines; 2 Mk-18 Smoke Grenades; 2 M-48 Stun Grenades; 2 M-67 Fragmentation Grenades; Mk-23 Pistol w/silencer, laser sight and 2 magazines.
The Sideshow exclusive, which includes a right hand with punch dagger and a separate punch dagger with sheath, is limited to 1,000 pieces. The regular edition is limited to a run of 3,500 pieces.
I’ll start off by admitting my bias to all things G.I. Joe. Being a kid in the 1980’s and early 90’s, my main toy obsession were the 3 ¾” tall Joe’s. And while I’m lukewarm on a live-action film being released, I love that Hasbro has been re-releasing the classic characters with new sculpts and the old-school packaging. And with the announcement that they’d be teaming up with Sideshow, there’s finally an option for high-end, quality G.I. Joe collectibles.
Snake Eyes uses the Prometheus body, which works perfectly for removing the various hands and the extra set of boots. The piece is wearing a spandex-like body suit on the upper half of its body. And that includes over the figure’s head, where the material is tucked under the head to give it a form-fitting look.
If we handed out a grade for the number and quality of accessories, Snake Eyes would score a perfect ten. The Sideshow exclusive version includes over 25 accessories. And that doesn’t include all of the pouches and compartments to place the numerous magazine clips and grenades.
Several of the pouches and the shoulder harness have actual working clips similar to those found on book bags (although a lot smaller). You can disassemble the guns into several pieces, as well as swap out magazines. And it’s these kinds of intricacies that justify the $119.99 price tag.
