REVIEW: Hawkwoman TCF

IMG_8132

Background

Tonner Doll Co. continues to add new superheroes to their DC Stars line of Tonner Character Figures. One of the newest female characters is that of former Justice League member – Hawkwoman.

DC Comics’ Silver Age Hawkwoman was named Shayera Hol. Born on the planet Thanagar, she worked as a law enforcement officer alongside her husband-to-be Katar Hol (the Silver Age Hawkman).

Packaging

This TCF is packaged in Tonner’s larger DC Stars box. In order to fit the large set of wings, it’s necessary to go with this wider packaging. As with all of Tonner’s figures, Hawkwoman is tied into the box via ribbons, and her plastic parts are wrapped to keep them protected. And she has a hairnet…like your favorite lunch lady.

The Figure

The Hawkwoman Tonner Character Figure stands approximately 16” tall and features 14 points of articulation (neck, shoulders, chest, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles). She has curly, reddish rooted saran hair and a sour look on her face.

Her outfit consists of a yellow halter-top, green spandex pants, red superhero underwear, red (with yellow trim) high-heeled boots, and a yellow faux leather belt. The figure also includes a molded, rubbery mask, gold earrings, and a set of enormous golden, feathered wings (with plastic straps that go over her shoulders). The TCF also comes with a display stand.

The Hawkwoman TCF is limited to a run of 1,000 pieces.

Our Opinion

When looking at the list of DC Comics’ female superheroes, Hawkwoman probably falls in the bottom half of recognizable ladies. I don’t remember seeing anyone dress up as Hawkwoman for Halloween or at San Diego Comic Con (if I do, I’ll be sure to document it).

With that said, Tonner produced what might be one of the most intricate accessories in their DC Stars line. The feathered wings attach around Hawkwoman’s shoulders by slipping her arms into a pair of stretchy, plastic loops.

However, the rest of the figure is somewhat plain. Remember, though, this version is based on the Silver Age Hawkwoman, so she has that retro look. We like that orange mask.

I think the character on the Cartoon Network's Justice League cartoon is Hawkgirl. And I believe that they're actually different characters, although, from the same planet.

Then again…I might be way off since I am far from an expert on the Justice League and DC Comics.
