REVIEW: The Umbrella Academy Book and Figure Set
Dark Horse recently released a set based on the comic book series - The Umbrella Academy. This set includes a figure based on one of the main characters – The White Violin – as well as a hardcover compilation of Volume 1 in the storyline.
Wikipedia describes the main story of the Umbrella Academy as follows:
The set comes packaged in a two-sided window box. On one side, you’re able to see the book. On the other side, you get a nice view of The White Violin figure. The front of the box, where the figure is located, features a nice illustration of the enclosed character.
The Umbrella Academy Book and Figure Set includes the Vanya (aka The White Violin) figure as well as a 152 page hardcover graphic novel. Vanya is approximately 4” in height, made of PVC plastic and comes with an attached black base.
The hardcover book, entitled The Umbrella Academy Volume 1: Apocalypse Suite, is by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá. It’s 7.5” tall by 5” wide and features full-color illustration.
Let’s first look at our lone negative regarding this figure. While the packaging might look great, you have to completely destroy it to get to the figure and book. Both have glued down plastic bubbles that have to be torn off of the cardboard backing. It’s not that big of a deal if you don’t keep boxes, but collectors who do might want to take note.
The book is a high quality hardcover version of the trade paperback. It features colorful illustrations of the six part series in just over 150 pages.
But the figure is what you’re interested in, right? Dark Horse actually did a great job with this mini PVC figure. With near perfect sculpting work, they have done a fine job recreating the comic book character. Our favorite aspect is the shading. They have used the gray shadings to take The White Violin figure from fairly ordinary to something you’ll want to display with your collection.
