Background

When it comes to Marvel, their most popular comic book character would have to be Spider-Man.  Being bitten by a radioactive spider, the alter ego of Peter Parker received a number of superhuman powers.  If shooting webs and crawling up the sides of buildings is your thing, then you probably enjoyed at least one of the first three Spider-Man films.

Tonner Doll Company teamed up with Marvel to celebrate Spider-Man 3 with a line of film inspired Tonner Character Figures.  While there is a Peter Parker TCF, we’ll be looking at the Spider-Man version.

Packaging

Tonner has upgraded their packaging on this figure.  While other characters in the Spider-Man 3 line were in a plain black box with the movie logo on the front, this box is larger and has a Spider-Man illustration on the rear.  The figure is secured in a plastic shell by twist ties and lies in front of a fuzzy picture of a skyscraper.

The Figure

The Spider-Man Tonner Character Figure is approximately 17” in height and has 14 points of articulation.  The head is made of high quality vinyl, while the body is constructed of hard plastic.  And each figure in the 3,500 piece run is packaged with a display stand.

The Spider-Man suit is removable by using the zipper located on the back of the outfit.  Tonner uses the Peter Parker sculpted figure underneath the suit, and he is wearing what looks like a flesh colored body suit below the Spider-Man garb.  The figure has rooted hair and looks to be the same as the Parker TCF.  One thing that might be different is that Spider-Man’s fingers can be posed to imitate his web slinging action.

Our Opinion

One thing that I hadn’t realized until I began photographing the figure was that there was an actual Peter Parker sculpted figure in the Spider-Man suit.  Many companies would have put a blank figure in there and then sold the Parker sculpt as a completely separate figure. But Tonner Doll Company pulled out all of the stops on this one.

The suit looks great, with the vinyl eyes being seamlessly sewn onto the suit, rather than applying glue that might later peel away.  The fact that the individual fingers on both hands are somewhat poseable allows for realistic Spider-Man poses.  It’s reason like these that Tonner is known for producing top of the line products.
