I had never been to a Dragon Con before this past weekend. But I was one of the more than 80,000 to make the pilgrimage to downtown Atlanta, Georgia for this annual event that was founded in 1987. I've been to the other big events (San Diego Comic Con, New York Comic Con, American International Toy Fair) in my 15 years of reporting about toys, collectibles, and art...but never to Dragon Con.
Maybe it's the name - a misnomer. I thought it was a convention solely focused on the fantasy genre. Not true. With five days of events around various downtown Atlanta hotels, you'll definitely find your niche. Of course, there's the infamous parade (you can watch that below). But there are also panels, signings, retailers...even a wrestling event.
Listen...it's still miserable and muggy in Atlanta in late-August/early-September. But the entire atmosphere is so chill that you might hardly notice (until you realize you've sweated through your 3rd shirt of the day). People are just there to have fun. I saw some of the best Cosplay I've ever seen at this event. I was clearly in the minority, dressed in awkward dad attire.
But, you know what, I think I've found a new favorite convention.
