REVIEW: Hell Resin Figure

pt hell 01

Background

Patch Together, the folks who turn user submitted designs into resin, vinyl or plush collectibles, has released a resin figure based on the artwork of Vaporotem (Rotem Moshkovitz). Named Hell, the little bunny appears to be intent on crushing that poor little flower.

Hell is a Bormal... an UNHAPPY one too~ He hates the sun, he hates kids, he hates your mom, he hates being called cute, he hates bananas, he hates, he hates hats, he hates girls but MOSTLY, he hates flowers. Hell is a part a big Bormals characters i own and hes been around for quite some time now.

Packaging

The Hell resin figure is packaged in the traditional plain white box. There's no label on the front and the figure is secured between two pieces of Styrofoam. The Hell resin comes to you in six pieces with a small tube of superglue.

pt hell 05

Our Opinion

I basically opened this figure as a blind box, since I didn't know what was inside of Patch Together's blank white box. The first thing I saw was several bright resin pieces. There are six  pieces (base, body, head, two ears and hair) that make up the Hell figure.

You also receive a tube of glue, which I usually end up getting all over myself and the figure. Luckily, I was extremely careful this time and was able to glue all of the parts perfectly. But I've realized that a little bit of the glue works wonders on holding the resin pieces together.

pt hell 04

On to the figure...I'm guessing that this is what the Easter Bunny would look like if it was infected with Rabies. Big teeth, sharp claws and red eyes. I had seen the Hell design on Patch Together and liked it, but it's a hundred times better in person. Honestly, it's my favorite piece from Patch Together and will be on display during the yearly Easter Egg Hunt.

So, what makes this piece so good? It's all about the sculpting. The sculptor on the Hell piece (their name isn't listed on the box or website) nailed the artist's illustrated design. I like that they sculpted the mouth and the hair around the face, rather than just painting on these features.

pt hell 07

The paint is average for a resin piece this size. There aren't any egregious paint flubs anywhere, only a little running around some of the sculpted areas. I like how the base transitions between shades of green. I would have preferred more of a matte finish on the entire Hell resin.

OVERALL: Patch Together took a great illustration and turned it into an even better resin figure. While there's not much background on the Hell character, or even the artist, you can't question a fun design. And the $39.95 price tag on this piece seems just about right.

You might remember that Patch Together released a resin figure based on the internet meme LOL WUT Pear. (It was actually one of our favorite pieces produced by the company) Well, they're back at it...teaming up with artist UrsulaV to release the Biting Pear Plush.

Currently available for pre-order, the 12" tall plush can be ordered for $15.00. Not a bad price, in my honest opinion. Look for them to begin shipping in the 4th Quarter of 2010.

REVIEW: Miss Mary Jane Resin

pt mary jane 02

Background

Paigey, otherwise known as Paige Pumphrey, submitted her Miss Mary Jane design to Patch Together with the hopes that she'd receive enough votes to get her character produced. Fans and collectors made that happen and Miss Mary Jane was realized in resin form.

Here's what Paige has to say about her design:

Miss Mary Jane was my muse and mistress for many years. Helping me to relax as only she can, she'd take the edge off the day and usher me into my creative zone for the night. Now I'm hoping she can do the same for you

The Facts

Miss Mary Jane
Manufacturer: Patch Together
Artist: Paige Pumphrey
Material: Resin
Dimensions: 8” tall
Points of Articulation: Zero
Edition Size: Limited Edition

pt mary jane 03

Packaging

The Miss Mary Jane figure is packaged in what's become the staple Patch Together packaging – a white box with a pair of Styrofoam pieces inside. Like with some pieces, this one has a large sticker featuring the box art. That's an illustrated version of Miss Mary Jane and just in case you thought she was broccoli...

pt mary jane 04

Our Opinion

I'm guessing that this might be a polarizing piece. Either you think the marijuana reference is funny...or you probably just think it's juvenile (e.g. - poo and middle finger toys). Personally, I like the design, but wouldn't display this in my collection. It might just raise too many questions.

The resin figure comes packaged in two pieces – Miss Mary Jane and part of her plastic baggy hood. Yes...that's a plastic bag she's wearing. Just check out the blue and pink lines (for proper sealing of your stash). But this means that you need to use the included super glue to glue the hood into a slot of the figure's back.

pt mary jane 10

Gluing is always a dreaded task when it comes to Patch Together toys. I usually end up gluing my fingers to the resin; removing paint from it; and end up just getting aggravated. So...check out where one of my gluey fingers removed paint from Miss Mary Jane's arm.

I really the sculpting work on this. Just check out her...umm...bud hair. Miss Mary Jane is also seated in a somewhat complex pose. Amazing work, and probably the best we've seen from Patch Together. The paintwork is also above average. While I don't really like the color shade chosen for the body, the dark green hair with what appears to be a brown wash looks great. And they went with semi-transparent resin for the baggy/hood.

pt mary jane 07

Overall: While the Miss Mary Jane resin figure might look great next to your “water pipe” collection, it's really not for everyone. And at $59.95, it's a little expensive for a novelty purchase. That said...the quality is the best we've seen from Patch Together (just read the gluing instructions better than I did).

REVIEW: Tube Ferret

tube ferret 04

Background

It’s possible that you’ve seen the Ferret Dance (A series of tubes) video on You Tube. If not…we’ve included it below for your viewing pleasure. Artist Jill Czajkowski, who goes by the name jillustrate, created the original character designs for the animation. And after submitting her designs to Patch Together, toy collectors can now get their hands on their very own Tube Ferret resin figures.

Packaging

The Tube Ferret is packaged in a rectangular white box with a large sticker attached the front. Inside, the resin piece is secured between two pieces of Styrofoam.

tube ferret 03

Our Opinion

Patch Together put the Tube Ferret resin into production after receiving the minimum number of pre-orders needed to start that process. Not a surprise, considering the illustrated and animated characters are cute…and they got a bunch of hits on You Tube.

While we’re only looking at the brown version here, there also is a white Tube Ferret. Both of the sculpts are the same, only the paint scheme differs.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the sculpt was that it reminded me of something. Yes…possibly the most vile designer toy ever produced – Barry the Beaver. Remember? They tried passing a vibrator off for a piece of art? Well, luckily, the Tube Ferrets do not vibrate and they are completely innocent.

tube ferret 08

The figure is a solid resin piece (no gluing anything onto it). They’ve used an airbrush technique on it. And the only issue I have is that the ferret’s mask is painted as two circles around the eyes. I sort of wish that they had connected those two brown circles, like the source illustration on the packaging.

Price-wise, $19.95 is about what I would have expected. The Tube Ferret is one of the better-produced Patch Together figures that we’ve reviewed. Now if I could just get that video out of my head…
