Background
Erick Scarecrow made his first trip to San Diego Comic Con to release his exclusive figure at the Toy Tokyo booth. The SDCC Exclusive Sandstorm Kissaki gives ESC-Toy’s original vinyl figure a trendy new color scheme.
Packaging
The packaging for the Sandstorm version is similar to the regular edition, with one somewhat major change. They’ve changed the internal plastic storage from the top and bottom mini trays to an interlocking tray that encloses the entire figure. That means the figure won't be flopping around the box...which is a good thing.
The Figure
The Sandstorm Kissaki stands approximately 10” tall by 4.5” wide and
features one point of articulation (the neck). While the sculpt is the
same as the original Kissaki (Point of the Blade), the black and orange
color scheme has been replaced with a brown and light blue one.
The piece has a staple of recent Erick Scarecrow figures – large feet.
She also has large, flowing, sculpted hair and swords that look like
hands on one end and pencils on the other. Each figure comes with a
signed limited edition print by Erick Scarecrow (while supplies last).
The run on the Sandstorm Kissaki has been limited to 300 pieces.
Our Opinion
A lot of the time, variants are released in all sorts of wacky
colorways that I just don’t understand. I guess those GID, blank and
all black figures need to be made for some collectors. It’s not often
that a variant outshines the original. But this would be one of those
times.
While the original Kissaki vinyl was pretty dark with a black robe,
black hair and a reddish-orange face, this version brightens the
character with a brown robe, light blue hair and a peach face. It uses
colors that are currently a popular combination in the fashion world
and brings a completely new (and improved) look to the vinyl.
As far as quality, there are still some paint lines that could be
tightened up and the seam in the figure’s bangs is fairly noticeable.
However, these have already been pointed out in our previous review and
deal more with the already existing sculpt.
And even though it was a Comic Con exclusive, ESC-Toy has held back
half of their run for those people who weren’t able to make it out to
the show.

I can't understand why they didn't taper that front lock of hair into the hairline and have the seam there rather than have a clumsy seam near the top and ruin the look of the figure.

I'm just happy I was able to get my hands on a Sandstorm Kissaki! The seam in the bangs bugged me for about a minute , but I got over it quickly when I considered this piece as a whole. Erick Scarecrow's original Liberty figure used to be my favorite. Now she comes in second place. (Sidenote: I can't wait to see Medusa!!!)

My Kissaki came with a signed print, and when I flipped it over I saw "Medusa" and "2009" along with a shadow of snakelike hair. I cannot wait to see her, and I hope I can add her to my collection!

I think Medusa IS the villan that was mentioned. I haven't been to NYCC or SDCC but I read the blogs and hear the rumors. All I know is that, like all of Erick's big-shoe-wearing chicks, she'll be badass!

I'm a online retailer. I won't disclose which site to remain private. I wish Scarecrow would give more wholesale options on his work. It's as if he holds the best versions of his toys for himself and not for the retailers. I had hopes of securing the Kissaki Avenger and there hasn't been a solicit from DKE. Now you have this beautiful colorway and I don't DKE will offer it as well. The Medusa figure "which I know will be probably amazing" will probably just sell direct at his ebay store. Again leaving out the retailers. I love his work but it would help if he offered some wholesale options to us.
