TCP Tide Pool Stinky Ginger 01

Background

Produced by the T+CP (Tomenosuke and Circus Posterus) partnership, Chris Ryniak’s Stinky Ginger sofubi vinyl joins Brandt Peters’ Stingy Jack and Kathie Olivas’ Calliope Jackalope as the initial trio of T+CP designs.

The third, and newest, version of Miss Ginger is the Tide Pool Stinky Ginger. This Stinky Ginger features two spray masks (white and black) as well as sprays fading from blue-green to yellow-green. The hands and stomach are sprayed in the lighter yellow-green to have those areas stand out from the rest of the body, which is more subtly shaded.

Packaging

The Tide Pool Stinky Ginger comes (poly)bagged and tagged similar to other figures in the T+CP line. The header card features the Stinky Ginger logo as well as character artwork by Chris Ryniak. And it’s easy enough to remove the figure from the bag without destroying the packaging.

Our Opinion

There still is hope for vinyl toys, and one of the reasons is the collaborative venture between Tomenosuke and Circus Posterus. It’s not often that a company (or companies) takes a great character concept, transforms it into a killer sculpt, and then produces the perfect toy. But it does happen.

Based on Chris Ryniak’s original sculpt, Ginger was tweaked by Youhei Kaneko in order to make the transition from resin to sofubi flawless (meaning getting the sculpt so it would balance in vinyl form). None of the incredible details (wrinkles) were lost.

The Tide Pool Stinky Ginger is the third version of the character to be released. It’s the first to veer from the pink color scheme. But you can still tell that you’re dealing with a very angry Zingiber officinale root.

There are three points of articulation – two at the wrists and one at the waist. You can change her from “cop a feel mode” to “it wasn’t me mode” in a split second. I don’t know if there is any reason for the waist articulation, other than allowing each piece to be rotocast.

The Tide Pool Stinky Ginger is made of Japanese sofubi. So this is top-quality vinyl, which I think warrants the $89.00 price tag. It just has the look and feel of a quality vinyl product.

The Stinky Ginger character takes over my top spot for favorite design from T+CP. I’ve always been a fan of Chris Ryniak’s crazy little creatures. While I never would have thought a toy based on ginger root would have worked, Ginger not only works – she thoroughly impresses.
