Our Opinion

It seems like Be@rbricks have been around forever (only 2001). Medicom's staple platform toy has been transformed into plenty of characters., but this is the first time that we've seen Uglydoll characters take on the form. (Actually...Wage did appear in Be@rbrick Series 19)

So how did these turn out? If you like Be@rbricks, you'll be happy. If you like Be@rbricks and Uglydolls, you'll be ecstatic. If you just like Uglydolls, you might be slightly underwhelmed. I'll explain.

Since David and Sun-Min are working with the Be@rbrick platform, the designs need to fit that shape. That's a pretty big constraint, considering that most Uglydoll characters have unique bodies, arms and ears. Essentially, you are getting the face (on these two characters, mouth and eyes) on the Be@rbrick head. The color matches the Uglydoll plush version, and there's the David + Sun-Min logo on the back of the figures.

What's my opinion on these? I keep comparing them to the Uglydoll Action Figures, which isn't really fair since the action figures were sculpted to look like the characters. I think the Ice-Bat and Ox Be@rbricks are a nice addition to a plastic Uglydoll collection, but they wouldn't be the centerpiece.

Overall: Bringing these Uglydoll characters to a platform toy that limits their uniqueness doesn't do the character design justice. However, both of these characters are available as Uglydoll Action Figures, which are truer to their plush and illustrated roots. The Ox and Ice-Bat Be@rbrick set will appeal to Uglydoll collectors who are looking to expand their collections outside of the normal lines.
