Artist Ursula Vernon - a freelance artist, writer and illustrator - is best known for her webcomic - Digger - and various children's books. But possibly her most well-known piece of artwork has ended up becoming an internet meme known as the 'LOL WUT' pear (originally named the Biting Pear of Salamanca).
The one, the only, the Biting Pear of Salamanca, better known from his appearance as the internet meme "the LOL WUT pear." Based on the original painting of toothy fruit. Accept no imitations!
The artist teamed up with Patch Together to release a resin figure based on the mouthy piece of fruit.
Biting Pear (aka 'LOL WUT' pear)
Manufacturer: Patch Together
Artist: Ursula Vernon
Dimensions: 5” tall by 3" wide
Points of Articulation: none
Edition Size: Limited Run
The Biting Pear comes packaged in the now standard Patch Together white box with Styrofoam inserts. It protects the figure well. And since there is no artwork or details printed on it, you won't feel bad about tossing it in the garbage.
I'm not that up to date on current (or past) internet memes. I still use the dial-up service Prodigy on my Tandy to connect to that World Wide Web thingy. And while I have heard of Lolcats and Rickrolling, I'm not hip to the LOL WUT pear. So while the character didn't trigger some feeling of familiarity, I must admit that I'm digging the resin figure.
Looking back at all of the Patch Together figures that I've reviewed, this is quite possibly my favorite resin that they've released. Even though it may look fairly simple, the sculpting work does a great job replicating the look of a real pear. With the exception of some of the paintwork connecting the teeth to the tongue, the paint on the Biting Pear's body is the best we've seen from Patch Together. They've almost perfectly replicated Ursula's painting - there are a few light spots on the pear's head that are missing.
So, would I pick this figure up? Definitely! It's a conversation starter. You could set it on your desk at work as a quasi-paperweight/freak out your co-workers piece. And it's less than $20. I'd hit up Patch Together through their website to ask them to produce more Biting Pears...since it appears that they're currently out of stock.
You can pick one up at the following:
