Hot Toys’ Planet of the Apes Cosbaby line features characters from the classic film in baby form. “Cos” is short for costume, similar to cosplay, so the figures are babies in costumes. These figures are based on the original Planet of the Apes from 1968, and not from Tim Burton’s debacle of a remake released in 2001.
The film revolves around Taylor (Charlton Heston), an astronaut whose spacecraft travels over 2,000 years to an unknown planet. On that planet, there is a society of apes divided into various classes (gorillas – military; Orangutans – politicians; Chimpanzees – scientists). After being captured by the apes, Taylor attempts an escape, with the film culminating in one of the most classic endings ever.

The original Planet of the Apes film is a bona fide classic. It still holds up fairly well, over forty years after it’s cinematic debut. So, it’s not that big of a surprise that Hot Toys released a Cosbaby (and 1:6 scale) line based on the film.
Hot Toys went with most of the movie’s main characters (minus the sexy female - Nova). The figures aren’t sculpted to look exactly like their on-screen counterparts, but they are dressed up like baby versions. Cornelius and the three Soldier Apes (Urko, regular and chase) all have the same head sculpt. Zira is slightly different, with bushier sideburns, and Dr. Zaius has a beard and some killer bangs. Taylor is the lone human of the collection.
As with previous Cosbaby lines, the quality is average. There are some noticeable seams, which is fairly standard for figures produced in this fashion. The sculpting work on the hair is impressive. And accessories are only included with three of the seven characters.
It’s a fairly strong set of figures, overall. While I would be okay getting any of the characters in a blind box, I think the Ape soldiers and Dr. Zaius are the standouts.
