Background

Back at New York Comic Con ‘09, Erick Scarecrow introduced collectors to a bundle of new characters and creations in vinyl, resin and plush. One of the figures he and ESC-Toy released was the Medusa rotocast vinyl. And while there were a limited number of the Medusa Black Mamba colorway (the initial colorway) at the Con, the rest of the limited edition run have made their way to ESC-Toy and retailers.

Packaging

With two plastic windows, this figure is packaged similar to the Kissaki vinyl. The front of the box has a window cutout in the shape of a snake’s mouth, while the side window (also the snake design) shows off the figure’s face. The rear of the package has some great artwork by Scarecrow.

Our Opinion

Erick Scarecrow has been known to put his own spin on some icons: the Statue of Liberty, tabletop arcade games…and now the Greek Gorgon sister – Medusa. While this figure isn’t likely to turn you to stone for looking at it, it brings all of Scarecrow’s identifiable design staples.

You have the female with the long eyelids/eyelashes and the small nose and mouth. The shoes are often a focal point of Erick’s figures. And with the black snake wrapping its way down to her footwear, you can see that the front of the sneaker has been transformed into a snake’s mouth.

The piece is predominantly rotocast vinyl, with the arms and snake bits as the exceptions. The quality of the figure is average for a rotocast vinyl of this size. You have a few places where the paint lacks “tightness”. But the sculpt is unique and it definitely works as an art piece.

You don’t need to be a Greek mythology buff to appreciate Erick Scarecrow’s Medusa. I expect future colorways to be released (who releases a figure with a specific colorway name and only releases one of them?), so if you’re not feeling this color scheme…you might have some options in the future.
