Background
Sideshow Collectibles brings those of us in the US the chance to pick up Medicom Toy’s most popular products. Medicom’s VCD or Vinyl Collectible Doll line is one of the company’s most collected.
Medicom has been known to work with Disney to bring the immortal Mickey Mouse to the vinyl format. Today, we’re going to take a look at two of the newest releases – the Roen Crown Mickey and Grunge Mickey.
Packaging
Medicom does a great job with their VCD line when it comes to packaging design. These boxes allow the collector to display it still in the package, if they so choose. While 99% of the writing on the box is business lingo, it does have a few drawings (albeit not many).
The Figures
Roen Crown Mickey stands approximately 6” in height by 3” wide and has no points of articulation. This figure is the design of the Japanese apparel brand Roen. He dons a crown, which is not removable, as well as a white shirt with a skull and crossbones image.
Grunge Mickey stands approximately 6” tall by 8“ wide and has no points of articulation. The rotocast vinyl figure comes with a clear plastic base and metal stand that is inserted into the figure’s thigh. He’s wearing torn blue jeans and a purple shirt and rocking out on his guitar (in mid air).
Our Opinion
Here are my thoughts on the Roen Crown Mickey. While it would have been nice to have a removable crown, it’s not a necessity. The quality of the figure is a little below what I’ve come to expect from Medicom. It’s mostly the paintwork around Mickey’s midsection. (Sculpted hands in pockets never really work out) Some of the lines aren’t that tight.
But the design is new and unique. Although, I’m not sure how many Disney, and more specifically Mickey Mouse, collectors would be interested in a character version that is not from a film or animated short.
The Grunge Mickey was really at the other end of the spectrum. The sculpting and paintwork is perfect. They did a great job at detailing the guitar, and Mickey even has a pick in his hand.
The main issue I have is that I would have loved to see a sculpt that doesn’t use the base and stand. But it does give the figure the look of being in motion. But maybe bigger is…how can you call him “grunge” without a flannel shirt? In the words of Gob Bluth – C’mon!
