Background
You might have seen the IWG Astro Krieg Series. Rocket World has taken three of their most popular Insurgents Wilderness Gruppo characters (Titus the Grizzly Bear, Hannibal the Mountain Guerilla, and Affonso the White Rhino) and decked them out in space gear.
Currently, there are three colorways available: Classic Galactic Silver (Ice Clear Bubble Helmet); Covert Space Pirate Black (Laser Green Bubble Helmet); New World Eco-Green (Laser Orange Bubble Helmet). For purposes of this review, we’ll be looking at the Classic Galactic Silver version.
Packaging
Each figure in the IWG Astro Krieg series is packaged in the same window front box. There is a little artwork (some sketches of what’s included inside) on the box. And all of the contents are contained in sealed plastic bags.
The Figures
The IWG Astro Krieg Mini Series features three characters (Titus the Grizzly Bear, Hannibal the Mountain Guerilla, and Affonso the White Rhino) that each stand approximately 3.5” in height and feature 3 points of articulation (arms and head). Each character comes packaged with an Eco-Dyne Death Ray Pistol and Human Skull Trophy.
The figures are made of a combination of vinyl, PVC and ABS. The body is a Hunter Space Suit, including a jet pack (with pollution free propellants, of course). And each character is wearing a plastic bubble…so they can breathe on their deep space missions.
Our Opinion
We’ve seen these specific Insurgents Wilderness Gruppo characters in several iterations. They appear to be the three most popular IWG members, probably because they were the original trio.
Patrick Ma, the artist behind the line, showed me some sketches about four years ago at Toy Fair. They were of characters in spacesuits. Could it have been a precursor to this line? Quite possibly.
I like that these figures bring something different to the IWG line, especially in conjunction with the Flying Saucer (which they can fit into). I’m guessing that these will appeal to current IWG collectors as well as those people who are interested in outer space and space travel.
