Background
The Boogily Heads are art toys produced by Illinois-based Rocket USA. Each figure is a replica of artist Gus Fink’s original sculptures, which he would sell in galleries and on everyone’s favorite auction site - eBay. Michael Perry, the owner of Rocket USA, was a fan of Fink’s artwork and the two teamed up to produce several lines of figures.
The figures depict little creatures with bobble head action. So far, two series of Boogily Heads have been released, with Series 3 set to hit shelves by the end of this year. We’re going to take a look at Series 1 and Series 2.
Packaging
The colorful cardboard packaging is chocked full of Gus Fink artwork. It’s nice to see the differentiation between the first and second series. There’s a checklist of characters, tons of illustrations and background info on the line. Also, with a small window section, you can leave the figure’s in the packaging for display.
The Figures
The Boogily Heads range in height from 1 ¾” to 2 ¼” in height. The
flat–bottomed art toys are crafted of PVC and each figure has a bobble
head that is securely attached to the neck. Each sculpt has a “hands
of the artist” feel to it. Rocket USA chose to leave in the artist
imperfections. This means that it’s not perfectly smooth and almost
resembles a piece made of sculpey.
Each figure is packaged with a Special Edition Mini-Comix foil pack.
That comic, illustrated by Gus Fink, fold out into a mini poster.
While the figures aren’t blind-boxed, the mini-comix are.
Our Opinion
My first impression of the Boogily Heads was – “eh…they’re okay, but I
like the plushies better.” I must say that these little guys begin to
grow on you. While the bobble head doesn’t add much for me (I have to say that they’re fun to
shake), I really
like the raw look that these have.
Even though they’re a mass produced line, the Boogily’s have that
handmade feel to each and every figure. If you would have told me
that they were handmade, I would have believed you. And
the characters are so varied that you’re bound to find one that
appeals to you.
Not being familiar with Gus Fink’s artwork, I was glad to see the steps
that Rocket USA went to introduce us to this obviously talented
artist. Between the packaging, the poster and the comic, you’ll
definitely be familiar with his style after opening a Boogily Head.
