Background

Sideshow Collectibles distributes several lines from Medicom Toy.  Among those is the Vinyl Collectible Doll, otherwise known as VCD, line of super-deformed vinyl figures.  The stylized figures have a little more attitude than the 1/6th scale variety and are not made to be an exact proportional replica of the character.

Among collectors, the Star Wars license is one of the most popular.  Sideshow revealed two upcoming VCD figures, C-3PO and Wicket, at San Diego Comic Con.  But one of the more popular figures is the Clone Trooper VCD.

Packaging

Medicom does a great job with their product packaging.  The actual box is designed to resemble the Clone Trooper’s helmet.  The visor section of the helmet is a plastic windowpane, so you can see part of the figure inside.

The Figure

The 8” tall Clone Trooper VCD has 8 points of articulation (the lowest of which is its' waist).  The character is based on the Clone Trooper from Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.  The figure comes with a blaster pistol, which can be held in its’ right hand.  (It’s sculpted with a space in between the index and middle finger)  And all of the details are realistic to the actual character...albeit slightly distorted.

Our Opinion

If I had to estimate, I’d guess that probably 75% of high-end toy collectors are probably Star Wars fans.  That late twenties to early forties age group grew up collecting the old 3 ¾” Kenner figures, and a great deal of them continue to purchase Star Wars collectibles.  I'll admit to being a part of the group.

The Vinyl Collectible Doll line might not be what the hardcore Star Wars fans gravitate to, but they’re an obvious choice for designer vinyl fans.  While the Clone Trooper is not exactly a Stormtrooper, it’s one of the better characters to come out of the Star Wars prequel trilogy.  (Unless you're a fan of aliens that speak with a Jamiacan accent)  And Medicom didn’t let folks down when it came to recreating the character in a stylized form.

You can pick one up at the following:
