SDCC 2007: Dark Horse (Booth #2615)

Img_1937

Dark Horse Comics had a number of their designer vinyl figures on display.  Lisa Petrucci's line of rotocast vinyl figures is set to begin releasing next month.  But the real standout here was Glenn Barr'sHell's Proprietor work.  Pictures don't do his  figure justice.  At 11" in height, it's much larger than I had realized.  Also, Barr is working on another line of figures known as his Muses.  They're a bunch of little girls riding around in their glass-enclosed spaceships.

REVIEW: The Gremlins

Img_1621

Background

One of the major publishing events of this year is the re-presentation of a long-lost jewel, Roald Dahl's The Gremlins. Purchased by Disney in the 1940s, and only published once as a book, Dark Horse is bringing it back in October and also creating new Gremlins stories.

Dark Horse has decided to launch a line of figures that revolve around The Gremlins story.  (It has nothing to do with Chris Columbus’ Gremlins films of the 80’s and 90’s)  In addition to plastic miniatures and statues, Dark Horse has produced a set of Gremlins vinyl figures.

Packaging

The window-front box is fine for displaying.  The figures are packaged with ties, and are simply snapped into the plastic tray.  The box has pictures of the two figures on the sides and a little information about the book on the rear.

REVIEW: Monster Theater

Img_1417_2

Background

Dark Horse
has given the reigns to designer – dKiller Panda – to interpret some of the classic horror characters.  The Monster Theater line, from SD Toys, gives collectors a deformed look with a little bit of cuteness.  There are currently two sets available:  Set 1Vampi, London and Invisible; Set 2Frankie, Bride and Mummy.  For purposes of this review, we are looking at Set 2.

Packaging

The figures are packaged side-by-side in a rectangular window front box.  This allows the in package displayers the chance to leave the figures in their box.  Also, there are plenty of illustrations, including drawings of the characters on the rear of the box.

REVIEW: Skullboy Vinyl

Img_1441

Background

Skullboy was conceived by Jacob Chabot.  The immensely talented comic book artist won the right to have his comic published.  See…Dark Horse ran a contest called New Recruits, which received hundreds of comic book submissions from around the globe.  The top 6 contestants were chosen to be published in a compilation book.  Dark Horse then produced The Mighty Skullboy Army Volume 1 comic book.

While still in elementary school, Skullboy has plans of corporate and world domination.  Turnips, monkeys, robots and interns…the comic has it all.  So it was only fitting for Dark Horse to produce the 3D vinyl version of the main character.

Packaging

Skullboy’s packaging is pretty impressive.  The window-front box allows you to display the figure MIB (…err mint-in-box).  There is a mini comic on the back, as well as an ad for The Mighty Skullboy Army Volume 1 paperback.

Ralph McQuarrie’s Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader

14803

Star Wars fans know about Ralph McQuarrie's importance...especially to the original trilogy.  He was the concept artist that is credited with bringing many of the characters and worlds you see in the films.  It's interesting seeing his original concept drawings and comparing those with the final character likenesses.

Dark Horse, the US distributor of Kotobukiya, will be releasing the 2 piece soft vinyl model kit set in July of this year.  The set is McQuarrie's original concept of what Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker would look like in their famous lightsaber duel.  The figure is 11" in height, 16.5" long and should run around $200.
