Science Fact! Eptesicus fuscus is the scientific name for the Big Brown Bat. It's also the name of the new, limited edition plush designed by Fleurescent Design for the folks at Fool's Mansion. If you're not familiar with Fool's Mansion, they offer “Gothic, Victorian, industrial, retro and fetish-inspired fashions and cater to those with a dark aesthetic”.
Manufacturer: Fleurescent Design
Dimensions: 10” tall by 17” wide
Edition Size: 600 pieces
The tag is rather simple. It has a skeletal depiction of a Big Brown Bat as well as the Family, Genus, Species and Common names of the animal. You never know when something about a bat might arise on trivia night.
I know what you're saying...why is a plush named after the Big Brown Bat actually purple? Well, there are plans for a black version, but they wanted to go for something unexpected to start...therefore the purple. Plus, the entire vibe of Fool's Mansion is Victorian goth – hence, a Victorian velvet that brings to mind a court jester.
Personally...the vibe I get is Batman! It appears that the plush was modeled after a bat-a-rang. Word of warning. I actually tried throwing it, but it just knocked over a lamp...it didn't fly back to me. And that deep purple color makes me think of the Joker. But that's just me.
All of the stitching is well done. It's a fairly complex pattern for only two pieces of material. I'm not really sure if it needs the white eyes, but if you don't like them...you can always just flip it around.
OVERALL: I'm not aware of many folks who are huge bat collectors...but this plush would be great for any Batman collectors out there. And if you're into the whole gothic thing...a big purple bat plush would look great next to your black eyeliner and poems about hurt.
Currently, you can purchase these in person at Fool's Mansion in Salem, MA...or you can shoot them an email via their website. They have a suggested retail price around $12.00.
