Background

Sideshow Collectibles has continued releasing new characters from their 1/6 scale Star Wars license. One of the more recent character releases was Lando Calrissian. We first catch Lando (portrayed by Billy Dee Williams) in the second film of the original trilogy - The Empire Strikes Back.

Sideshow’s background bio for the character is as follows:

Once a card-playing scoundrel and a successful smuggler, Lando Calrissian is right at home in the shadowy reaches of the underworld culture that permeates the galaxy. While he has rubbed elbows with hunters, mercenaries, outlaws and gangsters, Lando has style and sophisticated taste, and he settles for nothing short of the best. Lando's friendship with Han Solo goes way back, though it has often given way to rivalry and contention over the rightful ownership of Han's vessel, the Millennium Falcon. When Lando quit the smuggling trade and went 'respectable', he settled down as the baron-administrator of Cloud City and its lucrative gas mining operation on Bespin.

Packaging

Lando comes boxed in what’s become the “traditional” Sideshow Star Wars packaging. It features shots of the 1/6th scale figures on all four sides, movie stills on the rear, and a short bio on the inner flap. That front flap is held in place by magnets, and there is a window panel so that you can see your figure when opened.

Our Opinion

Sideshow’s 1/6 scale Star Wars line is one of the current lines that I’m an avid collector of. Aside for the bevy of Stormtrooper and Clone Trooper releases, Sideshow has given us several new characters…expanding the “Universe”. Even though we’re introduced to Lando Calrissian more than halfway through The Empire Strikes Back, he remains an important figure in the original Star Wars trilogy.

Sideshow has done a good job recreating the character, featuring what I believe is one of their better sculpting jobs. It's just sad that it's somewhat spoiled by the size of the head to the body. There are some folks who have commented about loose joints on the Prometheus body, but I haven’t seen that with this figure. It does appear that he’s a little smaller in stature than other figures in the series. I’m not sure if that was done on purpose.

Lando includes only a few accessories – mainly the two blasters that have been reused for several figures in the Star Wars line. The outfit is film accurate, although they did put his watch on the incorrect arm (there’s a still on the rear of the box showing it on his right wrist). The cape works pretty well, considering that it has a wire support in the neck that cinches the cape in place.

If you collect Sideshow’s 1/6 scale Star Wars line, the Lando Calrissian figure is a no-brainer, must-have. However, if you just want to remake old Colt 45 commercials, you could redress the Lando figure as the suave malt liquor spokesman version of Billy Dee Williams. Either way…you’ll be happy with the figure.
