Odelia Makes Dolls is a line of boutique style handmade plushies designed by Odelia Lavie. Straight from Tel Aviv, Israel the line uses recycled and natural materials (clothes, curtains, etc.) to produce various animals including dogs, cats, mice, birds, caterpillars, owls and hedgehogs.
We were able to get our hands on one of Odelia’s handmade dogs named RRRock-On Dog.
Each handmade plush is packaged in a reusable cotton drawstring bag. On that bag, there is a small patch labeling it Odelia Makes Dolls.
The RRRock-On Dog is approximately 13.5” long by 9” tall. It’s made from recycled materials including a black and white pattern, black corduroy (on the belly), yellow eyes and teeth and red spots and claws. Since these are completely handmade, they are one of a kind.
It’s amazing that through a website such as Etsy, individual designers from around the world can make their crafts available to collectors. Odelia Makes Dolls is one of those small design shops on the site that creates plushies because the designer – Odelia – enjoys it.
Most of the popular plush lines in the designer toy scene were once handmade. Uglydolls and Shawnimals were both being produced by the artists on sewing machines in a back room at some point in time.
And while some folks aren’t comfortable with the phrase “recycled materials”, it’s exactly that which gives them a folksy feel. I’m not sure why, but when you say used or recycled with plush…there’s sort of an eww factor. Obviously it’s unwarranted, but it’s the stigma that’s been attached to the phrase.
As far as the actual RRRock-On Dog, the piece uses various materials – felt, cotton, and corduroy. The stitching is all done fairly well. There are a few spots where there is material, but no stuffing. And while I like the dog pattern, I think that the character Odelia might have the most success with is her Owl plush.
