Background

Trick ‘r Treat is the much anticipated (and much delayed) film that interweaves four different storylines that occur on Halloween.  Called on of the best horror films in year, one of the main characters is a little trick-or-treater named Sam.  Sideshow Collectibles has released the Sam character as a 15” tall rotocast vinyl figure.

While little is known about the character, the most haunting image of Trick 'r Treat is Sam, the Spirit of Halloween who enforces the holiday's ancient traditions. To the untrained eye, Sam looks like a little boy out for a night of gathering candy, but what's hidden under the orange footy-pajamas is anything but sweet. The burlap sack with button eyes and a stitched-on smile shrouds something sinister, and while his half-eaten lollipop may look like a tasty treat, when wielded by little Sam, it becomes a deadly weapon. If Sam appears on your doorstep this Halloween, you better be wearing a costume and you better have a bowl full of treats, or you'll be in for one hell of a trick.

Packaging

The Sam figure is packaged in a rather enormous window-front box.  It stands at 17” tall by 8” wide by 5” deep.  The story of the character is printed on the rear, and there are photos on the inside ad outside of the box.  You’ll probably need scissors or a knife to cut through all of the twist ties that hold Sam into his single plastic tray.

The Figure

The Sam vinyl collectible figure stands approximately 15” tall and has 11 points of articulation (ankles, legs, wrists, elbows, shoulders and neck).  The figure is made of rotocast vinyl with actual cloth clothing.

That clothing consists of orange, footed pajamas (with feet treads) and a burlap sack over Sam’s head.  That bag has a stitched-in smile, two buttons for eyes and is tied with a piece of rope.

When you remove that mask is when you see the actual Sam.  No, he’s not a cute little kid.  He has a creepy pumpkin-skull head that really creeps me out.

The figure comes with a number of accessories: a small burlap bag that’s stuffed with filling; a half-eaten pumpkin lollipop; a heavy-duty figure stand.

Our Opinion

Are you looking for a creepy vinyl collectible doll or a creepy Halloween decoration?  Either way, you’ll be entertained by Sideshow’s Sam figure.

First, I’ll address some of the shortcomings of the figure.  The number of twist ties is a pain.  It will probably take you 5 minutes to release Sam from his packaging.  Also, all of the photos of the figure show him having burlap gloves on his hands.  But the actual figure has sculpted (burlap-looking) gloves.

And the last issue is the hole that’s in Sam’s hand to hold the lollipop.  There is a groove in between the thumb and index finger.  But where the hole is drilled, it doesn’t line up with that groove.  So you’ll either need to drill a new hole or have the lollipop stick coming out of the middle of his hand.

With all that said, we still like the figure.  Sam’s a creepy little guy…actually, a creepy big guy. The display stand is top quality.  He’s well priced for being 15” tall.  And he’d be perfect to put the front window on Halloween.
