Background

If you never saw the Disney version of Alice in Wonderland, you’ve probably seen or read some iteration of Lewis Carroll’s classic story.  One of the most popular characters from Walt Disney’s animated adaptation is the Cheshire Cat.  You remember…it’s the philosophical cat with the disappearing body.

Well, Span of Sunset teamed up with Disney to produce a line of vinyl Cheshire Cat figures.  They are based on the character from the 1951 animated feature film.  And for purposes of this review, we are looking at the Pirate Cheshire Cat, which is being distributed by Sideshow Collectibles.

Packaging

The packaging for this figure is great.  If the lid is closed, it just looks like a regular black box.  But as soon as you tilt the lid open, you see the Cheshire’s eyes and grin (including a gold tooth).  Inside, the figure is well protected inside of a plastic bag, with tissue paper and cardboard keeping it in place.

The Figure

The Pirate Cheshire Cat rotocast vinyl figure has zero points of
articulation.  It’s approximately 8“ tall by 6“ wide by 8“ long.
Produced by Span of Sunset in conjunction with Disney, this version of
the Cheshire Cat figure is limited to a run of 500 pieces.

The pirate version looks very different from the other colorways, and
it’s definitely an ode to one of Disney’s strongest recent trilogies –
The Pirates of the Caribbean.  The cat has an eye patch, gold tooth and
earring.  He also had some anchor tattoos, and if you flip him over,
you can see he has a wooden peg leg.

Our Opinion

The Cheshire Cat that I remember was played by Telly Savalas in the
two-part television movie made in 1985.  I know I have the video –
taped straight from TV – someplace.  But who could forget the classic
animated portrayal of the cat with the toothy grin?

Recently, we’ve seen a number of Disney characters invading the vinyl
toy scene.  Being a fan of their animation style (though mostly their
classic stuff), I appreciate that the company is producing limited
edition, quality products in line with the rest of the designer toy
universe.

The Pirate Cheshire Cat would look great in any collection. And if you
have some sort of pirate phobia, there are plenty of other versions for
you to consider.
