Background

Runaway Brain is an Oscar nominated Disney short was released back in 1995.  The 7 minute long animated short stars Mickey and Minnie Mouse, among other famous Disney characters.

Mickey completely forgets about their anniversary, and due to some quick thinking, promises her a Hawaiian vacation.  In order to pay for the trip, Mickey takes a job at Dr. Frankenollie’s office…where the mad doctor switches Mickey's brain with that of his monstrous creation.

Span of Sunset has teamed up with Disney to produce the vinyl incarnation of the Runaway Brain Mickey Mouse…post brain swap.   The drooling rodent is currently available in 4 variants, however, we’ll be reviewing the Candy Flake edition.

Packaging

In what might be the most amazing piece of packaging to hit the vinyl toy world, the Runaway Brain Mickey is stored in what looks like an enormous cereal box.  It’s complete with nutritional information, as well as some screen grabs from the animated short.

The front flap opens to reveal the figure, as well as a pack of cards and what resembles a DVD.  There is no DVD…it’s actually just a placeholder for the special Runaway Brain t-shirt that’s inside.

The Figure

The Candy Flake edition of Span of Sunset’s Runaway Brain Mickey Mouse
is the all-red version (the red paint has a metallic sheen).  The 7.5”
tall rotocast vinyl
figure was sculpted by Monster 5 and features 10
points of articulation
(wrists, shoulders, ankles, knees, waist and
tail).

The drool dripping from the figure’s mouth is a clear red, rubbery
plastic.  It gives the look of real drool and adds to the crazed look
of Mickey.

Also included with each figure are two special extras.  You’ll receive
a pack of Runaway Brain trading cards.  You can peel off the stickers,
and reminiscent to retro trading cards, the backs of the cards combine
to form a Runaway Brain puzzle.  And if that wasn’t enough, you’ll also
find a Runaway Brain t-shirt packed inside the box.  The style and size
are both random, but you can see the great looking shirt that was
hidden inside.

Our Opinion

I had never seen the Runaway Brain short until this figure piqued my
interest in what can only be referred to as a cult classic animation.
Only available on the Walt Disney Treasures – Mickey Mouse in Living
Color, Volume Two DVD
, the film might be a little too scary for the
littlest of viewers.

More than just a vinyl figure, the Runaway Brain Mickey Mouse should be
advertised as a set.  With all of the extras you receive, it’s more a
celebration of the movie as opposed to a simple vinyl toy.

That vinyl toy is great…the perfect pose to show exactly how the
monster’s brain turned Mickey into a mouth-foaming maniac.  Another top
notch sculpt by Monster 5.  And there are enough variants (Candy Flake,
Chrome, Neon and Original) for collectors to choose their own favorite.
