The Grim News for Grimskull

Grimskull copy

I rarely "get" why certain Kickstarter projects succeed and others fail. But I thought, for sure, that October Toys' Grimskull toy from the Skeleton Warriors line would sail past its $50,000 funding goal. I even put some of my own cash behind the project...knowing that, unlike other companies, October Toys has successful pulled off plenty of Kickstarter campaigns with no to very little negative feedback.

We're looking at 4 days left and they're not even halfway to their funding goal. Basically, everyone already backing the project could double their pledge...and there would still be some difference to make up. Why is it? They've run 6 previously successful campaigns with all of them actually being in collectors hands now. And the first figure from the Skeleton Warriors line - Baron Dark - pulled in $50,140 from 878 backers. Grimskull currently has 378 backers. That's a huge drop off!

It's not like they schlubbed the design together just for some dough. It's a pretty cool sculpt that works with all of the other Glyos Compatible figures. And you can pick one up for $20.00. That's about the same price as a Star Wars Black figure...and of comparable quality (if not better).

So is this the beginning of the end for medium-run Toy Kickstarter projects? Will silly card games and board games with instructions longer than War and Peace rule crowd funding? I guess we'll see on Tuesday September 29th 2015 at 10:00 PM EDT.
