We move on to highlight some of the best resin figures from 2013. This year, we saw the transition from vinyl to resin continue to gain speed. Since it's much easier (and more affordable) for artists to self-produce resin figures, we've seen this sub-genre take off. Here are our 5 favorites.
5. Vulpes: Exploration Rover Alpha 1 from polyopticsLABS
We first saw this crazy, transformable figure at New York Comic Con (and I'm assuming it's made of resin). It features lights with an on/off switch as well as removable plates and pieces.
4. Scamwave from umetoys (Rich Page)
A number of Rich Page's resin creations harken us back to the 1980's. And while this isn't Star Wars (he has produced some of those), Scamwave is a stylized take on Soundwave from the Transformers (yes, kids...we used to have big giant MP3 players that played cassettes and ran off of AA batteries).
3. Mermadi 2 Villainous from ESC-Toy (Erick Scarecrow)
2013 saw Erick Scarecrow focus more of his effort on short run resin figures as well as customs. This version of his Mermadi character figure was one of our favorites. It does sort of look like it's a fish throwing up a little girl's head...
2. Psychiatrist from Patient No.6
Some of the craziest resin figures I've seen come from the Ukraine based artist - Patient No.6. Usually dealing with psychiatry or some aspect of the brain, his depiction of the psychiatrist in this resin is likely to make the late L. Ron Hubbard smile.
**WINNER** 1. Terminator Tuttz from Argonaut Resins (Eric Nocella Diaz) and Kilroy's Attic (Leroy Wilkes)
This collaboration features the Tuttz resin from Argonaut Resins carved down to a skeleton and then cold-cast in metal by Leroy Wilkes. That piece is then set in a clear resin by Eric. And voila...it looks like we can see the innards of this Tuttz.
Toy Art Gallery is proud to present the latest (and biggest) collaboration yet between TAG and Paul Kaiju - the Slugbeard. Slugbeard stands in at 13” tall and 10” wide, with a vinyl wrecking ball attached with a real metal chain. This special debut edition of Slugbeard has been handpainted by Paul Kaiju himself, with no two exactly alike.
The Slugbeard Handpaint Edition retails for $250.00 and will be released via email lottery starting on Thursday, March 20th 2014 at Noon PT and ending on Friday, March 21st 2014 at Noon PT. Email firstname.lastname@example.org with “Slugbeard Lottery” as the subject along with your paypal address and shipping info. Winners will be chosen at random.
Illustrator Patrick Wong has revealed his contribution to the Art Without Borders 2014 benefit show opening March 22nd 2014 at the Art Whino Gallery. The Oven Cleaner Fatcap is a custom 7" tall Kidrobot Fatcap and is accompanied by 13 hand-cast 1" resin cans.
I think like a lot of people, when I started painting graffiti years ago there wasn't a lot of information out there - there was no art spraypaint brands or fancy tips like there is now. My friends and I would experiment using all sorts of household products with oven cleaner caps as one of them.
Richard Walker (AKA Ipsum) is showing off his custom for the Art Without Borders Show. Titled The Totem of Munny, this piece echoes Richard's "current interest in tribal cultures and how their iconography translates into modern 'popular' culture". The custom uses a 7-inch and a 4-inch vinyl Munny.
Kasey Tararuj a.k.a. One-Eyed Girl has revealed her new custom 8" Dunny for the Art Without Borders show on March 22nd 2014. The Ant Farmer is a "tricky little anteater. What better way to never go hungry than to manage your own ant farm. There's a reason his rosey cheeks are so chubby and plump"
Mezco Toyz has announced a new series of 8" tall plush toys based on the Sons Of Anarchy television series. This trio of bad boys makes up the most popular motorcycle club ever: Jax, Clay, and Opie.
Each plush features the Sons Of Anarchy reaper logo on the back of their jacket along with series accurate patches on the front. These will be available in August 2014 and sell for $15.00.
CKRTLAB Toys announced the release of their first line of vinyl action figures. Golden Age Guardians are 5.5 inches tall, feature 6 points of articulation, are made of environmentally safe PVC, and include 4 different weapons.
Wave One includes American Crusader (above) and The Black Terror (below). A limited number of figures are also available in variant Newsreel Black and White editions.
Erick Scarecrow has released LVL9999 Jezu - a special semi-clear hand-made resin figure. Each 3" tall custom comes with removable wings and spear accessories. This is limited to only 28 pieces, with each signed and numbered piece running $30.00.
Funko has announced the How to Train Your Dragon 2 Mystery Minis Series. A series of 12 unique 2.5" figures, they'll be available before How to Train Your Dragon 2 hits theatres on June 13th 2014. Look for the series to be available in May 2014.
