Background

The 2010 fantasy film Clash of the Titans might be best known for the cheesy commercial featuring Liam Neeson, as Zeus, shouting “Release the Kacken!”. It's a remake of the 1981 film of the same name, with a storyline that is loosely based on the Greek myth of Perseus.

Tonner Doll Company, which acquired the rights to produce Dressed Tonner Character Figures based on the Clash of the Titans film, has released the main character Perseus, as portrayed by Sam Worthington.

Our Opinion

Unfortunately, the Clash of the Titans film didn't get the types of reviews that the movie studio was looking for. But it made a ton of movie, so moviegoers worldwide must have enjoyed the film a little bit. Does that mean that they'd be interested in collectible figures based on the movie? It's quite possible, since Tonner isn't the first company we've seen release collectibles based on the license.

The Clash of the Titans' Perseus figure is only the second Tonner Character Figure that I can recall having molded hair, rather than wigged or rooted hair. (That other one would be Dick Tracy).

While Tonner's male figures often have a softer, i.e. slightly feminine, look to them, the Perseus TCF bucks that trend. But does the sculpt look like Sam Worthington? I really can't tell. The face/neck looks a little skinny compared to some of the film stills I've seen, and even though Worthington has starred in several action flicks...he's not an easily recognizable actor. And Tonner has applied some interesting paintwork to Perseus' face to mimic shadows/dirt/facial hair.

The Perseus figure features film accurate body armor. It's probably one of the most impressive outfits I've seen Tonner produce. That armor is completely sculpted, with some faux leather details.

The TCF includes a pair of accessories – a sword and a shield. The shield has two loops on it, so you can slide it over the figure's hand. The sword has a rubber loop that you wrap around Perseus' wrist. This is the type of figure where I'd love to see Tonner provide a hand sculpted to hold items. It just sort of looks awkward, having a sword hanging there.

OVERALL: Tonner's Perseus figure is all over the map for me. I'm on the fence about the face sculpt (I'd say it's about a 6/10 as far as likeness). I think they should address the inability to hold accessories. But I feel like Tonner has nailed another outfit with this well-produced armor and faux leather accessories.
