Background

Tim Burton has put his unique spin on the age old tale of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. According to IMDB, the plot of the film is as follows: “19-year-old Alice returns to the magical world from her childhood adventure, where she reunites with her old friends and learns of her true destiny: to end the Red Queen's reign of terror.” The film stars actors such as Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway.

Tonner announced that they acquired the license to produce Tonner Character Figures based on the Disney film. The first figure that they have released is – of course – Alice Kingsleigh. The Alice TCF features an authorized likeness of actress Mia Wasikowska.

Our Opinion

We ended up getting a sneak peek at Tonner’s Alice in Wonderland (film) line at Toy Fair 2010. I must say – it was one of the more impressive lines at the show and one of my favorite current Tonner licenses. And while I am looking forward to seeing the Mad Hatter and Red Queens figures, it makes sense that the first character released would be Alice.

It’s often difficult to gauge how well a sculpt is when you’re not that familiar with the actor/actress the likeness is based on. Mia Wasikowska isn’t a household name – unlike some of the other TCFs in this line (Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway).

From the film stills I’ve seen, the sculpting work looks like they’ve captured the actress’s image fairly well. The hairstyle looks good – the correct length, curliness, and color. And, even though the photos don’t really do the painted-on makeup justice – Tonner has gone the pale, minimalist route…similar to the movie. The blush paint might be a little heavy, but there’s no eye shadow.

And as with most of Tonner’s figures, they nailed the outfit. The dress, the shoes, the tights – that’s what really warrants this figure being a $149.99 piece. There’s a bunch of detailed work around the hem of the dress and with the tiny buttons.

While this wasn’t my most anticipated of the four announced Alice in Wonderland figures, it ended up far exceeding my expectations. The Alice Kingsleigh TCF will go great next to the Mad Hatter figure and the Red and White Queens (all to be released later this year). It’s definitely worth it if you’re a fan of the Disney/Tim Burton version of Alice in Wonderland.
