Background

The Treeson & Other Stories storybook was released last year at the Taipei Toy Festival. Written and illustrated by Bubi Au Yeung, this is the first book from the author. Available in translated English, the book deals with everyone’s favorite spiky white creature.

You might remember seeing one of the many Treesons vinyl figures released over the past few years by Crazy Label. Well, the company has dropped a blind-boxed line based on the Treeson & Other Stories storybook. With this, they’ve expanded the number of characters in the Treeson figure world by eight new figures.

Packaging

The line is packaged in a blind-boxed format. The outside of the box features an illustration of Treeson hugging a Baby Treeson on the front and a checklist (with figure ratios) on the back. Inside, each figure is held within a cloth-like bag. If you go the route of purchasing a case of 16 designs, you’ll be assured of getting a full set of figures.

Our Opinion

Treeson has been one of my favorite characters released in vinyl. It’s a nice and simple design with a really cute background story. So when I heard that we’d be seeing eight new figures added to the mix, how couldn’t I be excited?

Other than Ren, who was the little boy that helped remove the stick from Treeson’s chest, we’re given a boatload of characters unknown to the casual Treeson fan. In my opinion, the three human figures (Ren, Circle Boy, and Newspaper Boy) are the top draws. You can also add PinB to that list, although I have absolutely no idea what kind of creature PinB is. It does look like he’s wearing a chef hat.

We’ve seen various Baby Treeson characters, but what sets the GID Baby Treeson apart (aside from glowing) is that he features one black eye and one heart eye. The Tree Block and Mini Treeson Pack (one standing, one sitting and one lying down) really go together. You can place the sitting Treeson inside the stump and the resting Treeson can lie down on top of it. Probably my least favorite, the Heart Pack includes 6 hearts of three different sizes. There’s also a special chase figure…but it’s a secret.

The quality of the line is fairly average for your normal 3” tall series. The paintwork is acceptable, but there’s a sculpting issue with the tree stump. The inside of the hole is somewhat jagged, like it wasn’t sanded down. It’s not a huge issue, since it’s somewhat hidden from the eye.

Overall, it’s a fairly strong blind-boxed series. If you’re a fan of any of the previous Treeson figures – or Bubi Au Yeung’s artwork – you’ll be thoroughly pleased by adding a few of these new characters to your collection.
