Background

It was last year when designer Jure Gavran introduced collectors and lowbrow art aficionados to his Scapegoats line of rotocast vinyl figures. His Immigrant Billy raised some eyebrows and got some laughs, and he’s been slowly trickling out his second Scapegoat – Urban Criminal Billy.

Since the beginning of time, people, groups, things and places have been blamed by others for things they didn’t do. These unfortunate victims of the unjust blame are known as scapegoats. Until recently, the act of blaming others for one’s mistakes has been faceless and anonymous, but to everyone’s surprise this very act has decided to take form and come out to show his ugly face. He goes by the name of Scapegoat Billy and his sole purpose is to inflict discriminatory blame on the innocent.

Packaging

The figure is packaged in an oddly shaped triangular box. It’s not really “display-friendly”, even though it does has a window cut out in the shape of Billy’s face, so you’ll want to display this figure sans packaging. The story of the line is printed on the rear of the box, and, on the inside, the Urban Billy vinyl is packaged in dual interlocking plastic trays.

Our Opinion

I know there are some folks who feel that the Scapegoats line plays on racial stereotypes. There are others who find humor in these far-fetched stereotypes. And yet others either just love (or hate) the character design. Personally…I’m a fan of the oversized and stylized billy goat.

It starts with the sad goat face with the floppy ears and…goatee. You add in the floppy man boobs and semi-transparent beer gut (with ‘Thug For Life’ tattoo), and you have a classic character design. Oh…he’s also wearing crime scene tape underwear.

The included accessories include a bandana and gun…all a big part of being an urban criminal. The little glow-in-the-dark Blamee (includes collar and leash) can be stowed away in Billy’s belly. You just need to squeeze onto his love handles and pop his legs off.

Urban Criminal Billy features both matte and glossy black sections. There’s not a ton of paint application on the piece, but what’s there is well done. And the vinyl is squishy enough around the midsection that it feels like a high quality figure.

We were fans of the Immigrant Billy…but I feel this version blows him out of the water. Or maybe just shoots him full of holes with his gun.
