Background

In the age of “made-to-order”, CurlyQ Cuties offers plush aficionados the opportunity to create their own monster via the online Monster-Maker application. The kid-friendly website allows parents and children the choice of colors and shapes to create a truly unique character. With over 400,000,000 plush possibilities, the likelihood that you and a friend will create the same character is nil.

Packaging

The CurlyQ Cuties Monsters come shipped in a regular USPS box with tissue paper padding. These made-to-order plushies aren’t meant to be in a box, so there’s not much in the way of packaging.

The Figure

With CurlyQ Cuties’ Monster-Maker, you choose the following: Body Shape, Body Color, Eye Shape, Eye Color, Mouth Shape, Belly Shape and Belly Color. If you’re looking to recreate our design, we went with the yellow Giggles body, with baby blue large eyes, tongue mouth and the red P belly.

You can design your own monster – with over 426,888,000 unique possibilities – choose a random design, or select a design from the gallery. Each handmade plush is made of fleece, has felt attributes and usually measures about 12” in height.

Our Opinion

The idea behind the Monster-Maker (and also Fairy-Tooth-Maker) is similar to Build-a-Bear and other companies that allow the collector the opportunity to customize his or her own plush. However, CurlyQ Cuties goes about this all via their website.

The site is fairly simple. You’re able to select the different components that will ultimately make your plush your personal design. And you can see how this simplicity is designed with children in mind. You get a final illustration of what your handmade plush will look like, so all you have to do is wait for it to be delivered.

The quality of the plush Monster is around average. The eyes, mouth and giant red P (for Plastic and Plush, of course) were all – for the most part – well stitched. With this mouth choice, there are some yellow spaces where the thread goes through the fabric. I would have liked to see a solid line for the mouth, and you can see a little yellow between the mouth and the tongue.

Overall, this is more about the process of creating your own unique character than simply looking at plush and judging it. And since it was my design, wouldn’t there obviously be some biasness here?
