Background
Edward Scissorhands, the 1990 film that starred Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder, tells the story of a quiet young man (with scissor hands) and how he falls in love with a suburban high school girl. The film was the first leading role for Depp and the first time that he worked with director Tim Burton (that’s worked out pretty well).
Hot Toys, who has the license to produce figures for the film, has released a 1:6 scale Edward as well as a line of Cosbaby figures based on the movie. The Edward Scissorhands Cosbaby line consists of seven different characters straight from the movie.
Packaging
The Cosbaby line is packaged in a small blind-box that allows you to pick up a random box for a shot at a random figure. Although, some shops might have already opened them up for you to identify which character is inside. On the sides of the box, the packaging has photos of six of the seven (the secret one isn’t pictured) Cosbaby figures.
The Figures
The Edward Scissorhands Cosbaby line consists of seven different designs, each figure being 3” in height with multiple points of articulation. The different characters in the line include the following:
Edward Scissorhands (regular version); Edward Scissorhands (casual version); Edward Scissorhands (sleepwear version); Edward Scissorhands (secret version); Kim; the Cooking Machine; the Ice Angel.
Our Opinion
I was still a kid when Edward Scissorhands was released. It always seemed to be more of a chick flick, but that was well before it achieved cult status. And I was too interested in classics like the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Die Hard 2 and Dick Tracy.
It seems that the market for Edward Scissorhands collectibles is still going strong, after almost twenty years. The Cosbaby line is appealing to collectors who like a cute, baby look as opposed to the ultra-realistic 1:6 scale figures. But don’t think these aren’t screen accurate.
If you’d show someone the Kim and Ice Angel pieces, they look like fairly generic characters. It’s the Edward figures stand out from the pack. You pretty much can pick your favorite outfit out of the four figures, because the head sculpt is the same on them all. And speaking of sculpts, his hands look great. Considering how small they are, those scissor hands are fairly accurate.
The other figure I’m a fan of is the Cooking Machine. While it’s not really a memorable part of the film, it makes a fun mini figure. Ours was missing two scissor blades, but they are the same as the Edward hands, so they were easily replaced.
