Background

"Indiana Jones, professor of archaeology, is frequently called upon to save priceless relics from falling into the wrong hands. Dr. Jones faces many dangers as he travels the world, battling enemies from power-hungry Nazis to voodoo priests. Jones pieces together mysterious clues, deciphers ancient maps and navigates deadly booby-traps in search of forgotten treasures. Armed with his trusty bullwhip and charming wit, Indiana Jones defeats evil, woos distressed damsels, and recovers mystical artifacts."

And Sideshow Collectibles was lucky enough to snag the license to produce an assortment of Indiana Jones based figures and statues.  The first character released from their 1:6 scale line is none other than Dr. Jones himself.  This Indiana Jones figure is based on the Raiders of the Lost Ark film.

Packaging

Sideshow understands all of the raves about their Star Wars line packaging, so they’ve done the same thing with Indiana Jones.  Yes, there’s a magnetically secured front flap.  The box has two separate trays, one for the figure and one for the majority of accessories.

There are also two panels on the interior with background information on them – one for the character and one for Raiders of the Lost Ark. The area behind each of the dual plastic trays features the artwork from the original movie poster.

The Figure

The Indiana Jones – Raiders of the Lost Ark 1:6 scale figure stands approximately 12” tall and has 30+ points of articulation.  It’s the first piece we have seen that uses Sideshow’s new Prometheus body.  The figure is an authentic likeness of Harrison Ford as Dr. Jones.

Outfit consists of:

Khaki pants with dirt on the knees; brown, aged boots; brown belt; faux leather jacket; white, collar shirt with pockets.

Accessories include:

Two head sculpts – one with a sculpted hat, one without; hat with fabric lining; revolver; pistol with removable clip; brown, faux leather belt with holster; coiled bullwhip; articulated, bendable bullwhip; green satchel; gold idol artifact; sandbag; two sets of interchangeable gloved hands; two sets of interchangeable bare hands; display base with the Indiana Jones logo.

Our Opinion

First, let’s talk about the accessories.  There are a ton of them.  Who needs four different sets of hands for a figure?  Well, if you do…Sideshow’s got you covered.  I can’t really think of anything that they’ve left out, unless you wanted to package a snake in there with him.  They could have gotten away with 2 sets of hands, one gun and a single bullwhip…and collectors still would have applauded the accessories.

Now, let’s take a look at the most frequent complaint I’ve heard about the figure – the Prometheus body.  This is set to be Sideshow’s new, better-articulated 1:6 scale body.  But this is one of the first (if not the first) production pieces using it.  And there are some issues.

Many of the joints, especially the neck, are loose.  You can still pose the figure, but it can get frustrating when the head (especially with the sculpted hat) keeps flopping forward.  Secondly, the hands have some issues.  The hands snap onto a post, which then is put into the figure’s arm.  Either the connection between the hand and post isn’t strong enough or the hole in the arm needs to be made wider, because the hand often pops off of the post.

I have all the faith in the world that Sideshow will correct these body issues on subsequent releases.

Finally, I want to talk abut the quality of the figure.  The sculpt is one of the best Harrison Ford sculpts I have seen.  Better than the Star Wars line and better than Hot Toys’ Indiana Jones.  They went for the painted scruffy beard.  I don’t have a preference when it comes to painted on facial hair or sculpted and painted.  The outfit is top of the line quality-wise.  And I like the fact that they give you a choice of two heads.  Oftentimes, when you have a figure that wears a hat, the hat ends up being so out of proportion because it has to fit over sculpted hair.  And when a hat is so important to the character, you want to get it right.

If you can overlook the issues with the Prometheus body, it’s a great piece for Indy fans.  It’s loaded with great accessories, well sculpted and the outfit is well produced.
