Background

Davy Crockett is known as a pioneer, soldier and congressman.  While he died at the Battle of the Alamo, his legend was really reborn in the 1950’s - over 100 years after his death.  Due in large part to the popularity of the 1955 live-action Walt Disney adventure film – Davy Crocket, King of the Wild Frontier – kids remember Davy Crockett for his coonskin cap and The Ballad of Davy Crockett song.

Tonner teamed up with Disney to turn this iconic character into a Tonner Character Figure.  An authorized likeness of Fess Parker, who played Crockett in Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier, this figure is bound to be a favorite of those who recall the film (or the original three part miniseries).

Packaging

The Davy Crockett TCF is packaged in Tonner’s traditional rectangular box.  The front lid has a photo of a mountain range (looks like the Rockies), with a transparent map of the southwest United States.  Inside, the figure is secured using ribbons, plastic and a hairnet.

Our Opinion

Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier aired well before my time (almost before my parents time).  But I must say that I do remember watching the film on the Disney Channel when I was a kid.  And while I don’t remember the events of the film, the song has found a permanent home in the recesses of my brain.

It’s always difficult to compare a face sculpt of a not so famous face.  While Fess Parker was a popular actor in his time, not many folks could pick him out of a lineup.  Some facial stubble would have been more film accurate.  The clothes almost appear to be flocked nylon. (They feel "crinkly")  But the outfit is a great reproduction of his onscreen garb (although the real coonskin cap might have had some actual raccoon parts in it).
