Background

Sideshow Collectibles has long been producing figures, busts, statues and prints from the epic trilogy – The Lord of the Rings.  They recently released a pair of Hobbits as 1/6 scale figures.  After already reviewing Frodo, we’ll be taking a look at his pal…Samwise Gamgee.

Once a humble gardener in the Shire, Samwise Gamgee is Frodos closest friend and traveling companion, helping him to bear the One Ring to Rivendell. Once Frodo volunteers to take the Ring into Mordor and destroy it, Sam does not hesitate to follow his master. With the Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo and Sam begin the long, perilous journey. When the Fellowship is broken and scattered, Sam alone remains with Frodo, and together, but not alone, the two young hobbits continue their quest toward Mount Doom to destroy the evil ring and end Sauron’s reign over Middle-earth.

Packaging

Again, Sideshow got the packaging on these as close to perfect as can be asked.  The only thing I would have liked to see is magnets instead of Velcro to hold the doors shut (like the Star Wars line).

The front doors open for plenty of reading on the inside panels.  There is background information about the character as well as a few of the accessories.  And the packaging has photos of the figure as well as Sean Astin from the film.

The Figure

The Samwise Gamgee 1/6 scale figure is approximately 9” in height and has over 25 points of articulation.  It uses the new Sideshow body that was created for smaller characters.  The head sculpt is an authentic likeness of Sean Astin as Sam from The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring.

The figure’s outfit consists of: a white shirt, grey vest, brown corduroy coat, olive green cloak, Lothlorien cloak with elven broach, and knee high pants.

The figure’s accessories include: a large backpack with bedroll, haversack, Weathertop sword and scabbard, pipe, cooking items (pot, pans, ladle), pipe, sausage links, water skin with strap, and display base.

Sam comes packaged with 4 different hands, although 3 of them are left hands (right gripping, left open, left gripping and left fist).   The Sideshow Exclusive version includes Lembas Bread, which you can hide in Sam’s haversack.

The regular version is limited to a run of 2,000 pieces while the Sideshow Exclusive is limited to 1,500 pieces.

Our Opinion

This new Sideshow body is rather impressive.  Previously, we did point out that on a figure like a Hobbit, whose big, hairy feet are focal points, the small crease near the ankle is an eyesore.  But the articulation of the piece is more lifelike than any previous 1/6 scale Sideshow figure.

I’d like to give a thumbs up to Sideshow for sculpting the hair separate from the head.  I hope they continue this, because it doesn’t allow for flesh paint to get on the hair or vice versa.  It gives the piece a nice, clean look.  Also, the sculpting work on Sam…err Sean Astin…is one of their better jobs on an authentic likeness.

They’ve loaded the Samwise Gamgee figure with a ton of accessories.  Is he going on a month-long trip?   I guess so; he’s obviously packed for it.  Now, we just have to wait for Merry and Pippin to join him and Frodo.
