Background

Rocket USA recently released Series 3 of Gus Fink’s Boogily Heads.  The lineup consists of 6 new characters: Futoro, Skrap Bear, Mummoo, Pumpkin Billy, Scantron and Zuggs (in that order above).

The Boogily Heads line is based on Fink’s original foam sculptures, but they are produced as PVC figurines.  I’m not exactly sure what “boogily” is, but I’m guessing it has something to do with the bobble head each figure has at the top of its’ body.

Packaging

Each figure is packaged within a small, rectangular box with a cutout in the front.  That open section allows part of the inner plastic tray (and actual figure) to be seen.  Each piece is packaged with a collectible mystery “mini comix” and poster.  The poster is actually on the other side of the comic.  And all of the packaging is covered with great artwork by Gus Fink.

The Figures

Each of the 6 characters in Boogily Heads Series 3 measures between
1.75” and 2.25” tall.  The figures are split in two pieces (head and
body), with the head being connected with a small spring.  This allows
for bobble head action.

The pieces are sculpted with unique “hands of the artist” look and
feel.  All of the little imperfections are visible, but it’s supposed
to look that way.  That gives them a handmade appearance.  And if you're lucky, you might find a few color variants available.

Our Opinion

To “get” this line, you have to accept that bobble heads can be art
pieces and the figures look better with little imperfections.  Often,
artists draw something up and leave it to the pros to sculpt a nice,
clean piece.  But Gus Fink decided to take the project into his own
hands, and you can see exactly how he envisioned the pieces.

So how do we rate this series?  Overall, I’d say that it’s on par with
Series 2 (which we liked better than Series 1).  But Series 3 has two
of my personal favorite characters from the Boogily Heads universe:
Pumpkin Billy and Scantron.

Being a fan of Halloween (or maybe just the bite-sized Three
Musketeers), I pretty much like anything with a pumpkin head.  And this
character just reminds me of Jack Pumpkinhead from the classic 80’s
movie…Return to Oz.  And I’m not sure if they still use Scantron tests
(you would have to think some new technology was invented), but that
name reminds me that I always need to bring a pair of Number 2 pencils.
