Background

Tonner Doll Company presents their take on the caped crusader - BatmanBruce Wayne’s alter ego is the newest character added to the DC Stars line of Tonner Character Figures.  Inspired by art from the Silver Age of comic books (late 50’s to early 70’s), this iteration of the superhero from Gotham City uses the traditional gray and blue outfit.

Packaging

The Batman figure uses the standard large DC Stars box.  Since the body sculpt is the superhero version, it takes a slightly larger box than the female Tonner Character Figures.  And as with every Tonner product, the figure is secured and well protected within the box.

The Figure

The Batman TCF is approximately 17” in height and has 14 points of articulation (neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, chest, hips, knees, and ankles).  They have used the superhero sculpt for the plastic body.  The figure’s vinyl head has black, rooted saran hair that is styled in a slicked back look.

The costume is based on the Silver Age version of the comic book character.  The figure includes the following: bodysuit including the Matman logo; leather belt; zipper up faux leather boots; rubber gloves; removable cape and mask; display stand.  The figure is limited to a run of 3,000 pieces.

Our Opinion

The Batman TCF is the first big name DC Comics male superhero that Tonner has produced (apologies to Aquaman).  And they did an amazing job.  While some folks might have wanted a licensed figure from the upcoming film, The Dark Knight, Tonner is focusing their DC Stars line on artwork from the Silver Age.  Way back in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s.

I actually like that they went with the painted on white eyes (on the mask) rather than cutouts.  It gives the figure more of a retro look and conforms to the artwork that Robert Tonner used as an inspiration.

Tonner’s DC Stars line has brought collectors eye to eye with classic superheroes from the comic book giant.  Modeling their character figures after artwork from the Silver Age of comics has given a retro look to these well-known heroes and villains.  And the quality of Tonner products consistently places them at the head of the class.  So it’s only fitting that it’s one of our favorite lines.
