REVIEW: Tide Pool Stinky Ginger

TCP Tide Pool Stinky Ginger 01

Background

Produced by the T+CP (Tomenosuke and Circus Posterus) partnership, Chris Ryniak’s Stinky Ginger sofubi vinyl joins Brandt Peters’ Stingy Jack and Kathie Olivas’ Calliope Jackalope as the initial trio of T+CP designs.

The third, and newest, version of Miss Ginger is the Tide Pool Stinky Ginger. This Stinky Ginger features two spray masks (white and black) as well as sprays fading from blue-green to yellow-green. The hands and stomach are sprayed in the lighter yellow-green to have those areas stand out from the rest of the body, which is more subtly shaded.

Packaging

Our Opinion

There still is hope for vinyl toys, and one of the reasons is the collaborative venture between Tomenosuke and Circus Posterus. It’s not often that a company (or companies) takes a great character concept, transforms it into a killer sculpt, and then produces the perfect toy. But it does happen.

TCP Tide Pool Stinky Ginger 09

Based on Chris Ryniak’s original sculpt, Ginger was tweaked by Youhei Kaneko in order to make the transition from resin to sofubi flawless (meaning getting the sculpt so it would balance in vinyl form). None of the incredible details (wrinkles) were lost.

The Tide Pool Stinky Ginger is the third version of the character to be released. It’s the first to veer from the pink color scheme. But you can still tell that you’re dealing with a very angry Zingiber officinale root.

TCP Tide Pool Stinky Ginger 07

There are three points of articulation – two at the wrists and one at the waist. You can change her from “cop a feel mode” to “it wasn’t me mode” in a split second. I don’t know if there is any reason for the waist articulation, other than allowing each piece to be rotocast.

The Tide Pool Stinky Ginger is made of Japanese sofubi. So this is top-quality vinyl, which I think warrants the $89.00 price tag. It just has the look and feel of a quality vinyl product.

TCP Tide Pool Stinky Ginger 10

The Stinky Ginger character takes over my top spot for favorite design from T+CP. I’ve always been a fan of Chris Ryniak’s crazy little creatures. While I never would have thought a toy based on ginger root would have worked, Ginger not only works – she thoroughly impresses.

REVIEW: Calliope Jackalope #2

Calliope Jackalope 2 05

Background

Tomenosuke and Circus Posterus continue to release new sofubi vinyl figures under the T+CP banner. Art power couple Kathie Olivas (Calliope Jackalope) and Brandt Peters (Stingy Jack), as well as Chris Ryniak (Ginger), have all released limited edition Japan-made vinyl over the past several months.

One of those new releases is the Calliope Jackalope #2 from artist Kathie Olivas. Not only is this ivory colorway the second painted version of the vinyl, but it contains a few subtle tweaks to the original.

The Calliope Jackalope comes packaged in a poly bag with header card. That card is the same as the first Calliope. It features an illustrated version of the character (from chest up) on the front. The back comes signed by Kathie Olivas and includes the number in the edition.

Calliope Jackalope 2 09

Our Opinion

I like to refer to the Calliope Jackalope #2 as the “Winter Calliope Jackalope”. It features soft colors like the ivory body and sky blue accents. It also looks like the little one was left out in the cold...just look at its pink nose.

That sniffly pink nose is one of the two differences I noticed when comparing this one to the Calliope Jackalope #1. T+CP added two new paint masks to this version. So in addition to the nose, there's also a slight difference in the pupils. The second version has a small white dot on the black of the eye. While it might be easy to overlook, I like this subtle change.

Calliope Jackalope 2 10

The paint is where this figure excels (especially in the realm of rotocast vinyl). The Calliope Jackalope #2 features seven different sprays on that ivory vinyl. The blue spray on the belly matches the blue vinyl hat. The face is sprayed peach with those pink accents. The propeller and zipper are air brushed the same dark brown color. The broken antlers are brushed a dijon mustard yellow. And the eyes feature a pair of paint masks – white and black.

Calliope Jackalope 2 07

Of course, both Calliopes use the same sculpt. But the color of the vinyl on this version allows some of those sculpted elements (around the legs and the patch on the behind) to stand out more.

If you missed out on the now sold out Calliope Jackalope #1, now's the time to act on the wintery #2. It's also not expected to last very long. And, personally, I like this version a little more than the original. (But both really reflect the source artwork of Kathie Olivas to a tee)

T+CP – Chris Ryniak’s Pickled Ginger

Pink Pickled Ginger 1

Circus Posterus x Tomenosuke have announced the newest Ginger sofubi variant from artist Chris Ryniak. Pickled Ginger might just be my favorite piece from the T+CP collaborations.

The colors this time around feature an opaque spray of pink paint on translucent vinyl with carefully painted details. You can see this pretty little lass’ pearly white chompers in that lovely little grimace! The details and character with this version really pop – but don’t tell her that because she doesn’t take compliments well.

The Pickled Ginger will be an edition of 120 pieces, and they will be divided equally between Tomenosuke (international customers) and Stranger Factory (North American customers). When it's released, look for it to retail for $89.00.

REVIEW: Toxic Marshmallow Stingy Jack

Review Tomenosuke Toxic Marshmallow Stingy Jack 01

Background

Tomenosuke and Circus Posterus joined forces to create the T+CP art toy label. To date, they have released sofubi figures based on three different characters: Calliope Jackalope (Kathie Olivas), Stingy Jack (Brandt Peters), and Stinky Ginger (Chris Ryniak). For this review, we'll be taking a gander at Brandt Peters' Toxic Marshmallow Stingy Jack.

Brandt Peters describes his Stingy Jack character as “a US artist’s version of an Irish myth, but told from a contemporary, western neo-vintage perspective.” And says that the vinyl is “designed to look like an American 1930s cartoon character and produced in a Japanese Sofubi format, with a bit of punk thrown in for good measure”.

Review Tomenosuke Stingy Jack Header Card

Packaging

Like the Calliope Jackalope vinyl, we received this figure before it was released and it didn't have the header card. Above is what that header card looks like. The figure comes bagged with that header card attached.

Review Tomenosuke Toxic Marshmallow Stingy Jack 08

Our Opinion

The Toxic Marshmallow Stingy Jack is the second Stingy Jack colorway released by T+CP. The first one was simply entitled Stingy Jack, and it more closely resembled a jack-o-lantern in its color scheme. The alternate colorway features the same sculpt on a sofubi vinyl with a black, red and cream paint scheme.

Review Tomenosuke Toxic Marshmallow Stingy Jack 03

It appears that there were six paint masks used for the Toxic Marshmallow version. There is the red-orange on the hands, feet, buttons and eyes. There's a brown used on the cigar and the stem fade. A dull sky-blue is used for the ruff (Collar). The pumpkin head is faded between an off-white and cream color. And a pink is used around the eyes.

Similar to the previously reviewed Calliope Jackalope, the Scary Jack sofubi is top of the line quality. I look at the sculpting and the paintwork and can't find a single thing that could be improved upon. It's really a different tier of designer vinyl.

Review Tomenosuke Toxic Marshmallow Stingy Jack 07

So I rated this one slightly ahead of the T+CP Calliope Jackalope. Why, you might ask? I'm a fan of jack-o-lantern toys. Not sure why. Possibly it was from watching Return To Oz a few too many times as a youngster. Maybe it was Disney's version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Whatever it was...I like toys with giant gourds as heads.
