To celebrate the upcoming launch of Disney Pixar’s Monsters University movie, the prequel to 2001’s smash hit Monsters, Inc., Hot Toys has announced the Mike and Sulley Vinyl Collectible Set. Mike stands in around 5" in height, while the to scale Sulley is about 9" tall.
Sideshow Collectibles currently has the set available to pre-order for $129.99. They're estimated to begin shipping in Q3 of 2013 (sounds soon).
In May 2011, Walt Disney Pictures released the fourth installment from their Pirates of the Caribbean film series. In Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Johnny Depp reprises his role as the eccentric Captain Jack Sparrow. He's joined on-screen by his former love-interest and current foil Angelica (played by Penélope Cruz).
Hot Toys has produced plenty of figures (sixth-scale and Cosbaby) based on the Pirates of the Caribbean movie license. Angelica follows the Captain Jack Sparrow DX figure as the two sixth-scale figures released from On Stranger Tides. The Angelica Sixth Scale Figure is Hot Toys' Summer 2012 Toy Fair Exclusive and has been released in limited quantities by Sideshow Collectibles.
Angelica – Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Series: Movie Masterpiece Series Manufacturer: Hot Toys Sculpted by: K.A. Kim Authorized Likeness: Penélope Cruz Material: Sixth Scale Female TrueType Body with Implanted Fabric Hair Dimensions: 11.25” tall Points of Articulation: 28 points Outfit: Black Hat with Feather; Reddish-Brown Patterned Long Jacket; Patterned Long Vest; White Long-Sleeved Shirt; Black Girdle; Pair of Black Pants; Buckled Belt; Pair of Leather-like Black Boots Accessories: Two Swords with Holster; Dagger; Pair of Earrings; Gold Necklace with Charm; Compass; Pair of Chalices; Captain Jack Voodoo Doll; Figure Stand with Angelica Nameplate and Movie Logo Pricing: $224.99
The outer packaging features a photo of Penelope Cruz as Angelica from the film (although, it could be a still of the figure since it appears filtered). The interior box has a cutout that allows you to easily slide the inner tray out. Inside that, there's a plastic tray and cover that contains the figure and all of those accessories.
The last Hot Toys' produced female sixth-scale figure I reviewed was the Sarah Conner collectible from Terminator 2: Judgement Day. While there are plenty of similarities between the two, the one big difference is the hair. As a company, you can either go with sculpted hair or fabric hair. Oftentimes, this makes or breaks the figure.
With Angelica, Hot Toys went the fabric hair route. I often don't take time to “style” figures' hair after unpacking them. (There's just something creepy about a 30-something man flat ironing a doll's hair...no?) Luckily, her hair is fairly short and didn't need much work. Plus, she looks much better wearing the pirate hat.
As with mostly everything Hot Toys does in this scale, the sculpting is amazing. That sculpting with proper paint application make this toy the spitting image of Penélope Cruz. (Some of my close-up photos distort the look a little) Although, this isn't the glamorous Cruz we see strutting the red carpet, the sculpt/paint-work reflects her on-screen look.
Hot Toys has some method where they can paint the pigmented look of skin – blemishes and all. It's viewable on both the face and the rubbery body portions. For example, take a gander at the close-up photo of Angelica's chest tattoo. See all of those tiny red and brown dots? That's what gives the skin that realistic look.
As far as accessories, Angelica comes fully loaded. Like the Captain Jack Sparrow figure, Angelica includes more accessories than she has room for. Of course, she can wear the dagger and sword. But the standout accessory is probably the Jack Sparrow voodoo doll. It's pretty detailed for being such a small piece.
Priced at $224.99, Angelica is $15.00 cheaper than the Captain Jack Sparrow figure. But he was a DX figure, which included two faces and Hot Toys' Parallel Eyeball Rolling System. However, the Angelica figure was a Summer 2012 Toy Fair Exclusive, so it was only available through a limited number of venues.
With all of that said, I probably would have pegged this as a $199.99 piece. While I don't feel that she's a necessary figure for a fan of the Pirates franchise, the quality is enough to warrant the high price point.
With Disney'sMonsters, Inc. movie being re-released in 3D in early 2013 (and Monsters University coming in the Summer of 2013), Hot Toys has announced their Monsters, Inc. Cosbaby (S) Series. Each of the six Cosbaby figures stand approximately 3 inches in height.
The Monsters, Inc. Cosbaby (S) Series includes: Boo, Boo (Monster Ver.), Sulley, Mike, Mike (Diver Ver.), and Randall. Look for these to be released in the First Quarter of 2013.
Funko has announced two more vinyl figures that will be part of their Pop! Disney: Series 4. Slated to be released on Thursday December 13th 2012, these two will come straight from the Disney/Pixar film Wall-E. You'll be able to pick up Wall-E and Eve just in time for the holidays.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was released in May 2011 by Walt Disney Pictures. The adventure fantasy film is the fourth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean series and focuses on Captain Jack Sparrow (again played by Johnny Depp) as he searches for the Fountain of Youth.
Late in 2011, Hot Toys released their much anticipated Captain Jack Sparrow 1/6th Scale Collectible Figure. This DX Series figure features Hot Toys' revolutionary PERS (Parallel Eyeball Rolling System) and a pair of interchangeable Jack Sparrow faces (one serious and one grinning).
But is it the ultimate Pirates of the Caribbean collectible – as some might claim? We'll break that down.
Captain Jack Sparrow 1/6th Scale Collectible Figure Series: DX Series Manufacturer: Hot Toys Sculpted by: Kojun Authorized Likeness: Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Dimensions: 1/6th Scale Points of Articulation: TrueType body with over 30 points of articulation Outfit: Faux leather brown hat; Cream long-sleeved shirt; Blue and brown patterned vest; Dark brown long jacket; Pair of dark brown pants; Dark brown and light brown faux leather belts; Dark brown faux leather shoulder band with saber sheath; White and pink scarf; Pair of brown boots Accessories: Two interchangeable faces featuring Hot Toys' Parallel Eyeball Rolling System; Nine interchangeable hands: Pair of relaxed hands, Pair for holding flintlock pistol, Right hand for holding saber; Pair for holding rudder or telescope, Pair showing his “iconic gesture”; Two flintlock pistols; Saber; Rum Bottle; Black Pearl in a bottle; Left lace wrist band; Right wrist band; Feather on waist; Compass; Small telescope; Head sculpt of his mother on waist; Duck’s foot sculpture; Movie-accurate rudder wheel with base and movie nameplate; Pirate flag; Figure stand with Captain Jack Sparrow nameplate and the movie logo Pricing: $239.99 List Price
The Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides themed packaging features three layers of goodies. Upon opening up the magnetic front flap, you'll see the pirate flag. Below that sits the figure and most of the accessories in a layer of foam. And the lowest level features the rudder, nameplate and figure stand.
I often rely on critics reviews when choosing what films to watch. I don't always agree with what they have to say, but it's helpful in weeding out movies I'm on the fence about watching. And while the latest installment of Pirates of the Caribbean (On Stranger Tides), wasn't a critical success...I thought it was entertaining. Actually, I have enjoyed all four of the “Pirates” films, primarily due to Johnny Depp's eccentric Captain Jack Sparrow.
Being a fan of the series, I've seen plenty of toys based on Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean license. Not surprisingly, the most popular character is that now iconic pirate Jack Sparrow. Hot Toys has released the ol' Captain in many different forms (primarily 1/6th scale and Cosbaby), but this is the first time we're seeing Jack Sparrow as a part of their DX Series.
The most important advancement in the DX Series is the addition of the Parallel Eyeball Rolling System, or PERS. By removing the face, you can operate a small joystick that allows the user to move the eyes around 360 degrees. Remember the days when toys would be released with different eye position variants? Hot Toys allows you to choose the “look” you're going for. And if that wasn't enough, they give you a pair of faces with different expressions. (I guess they haven't yet discovered how to let you change a toy's mouth from a frown to a smile.)
Combining excellent sculpting and extraordinary paintwork, Hot Toys has created the most realistic Jack Sparrow I have ever seen. I'd be hard-pressed to find anything close to this realistic in a collectible, and I'm guessing many folks might not be able to distinguish the real Johnny Depp from the toy version – in photos, that is.
But if you're going to be paying over $200 for a collectible, you don't just want quality...you also want some quantity. Hot Toys provides that quantity in accessories. The most impressive accessory is obviously the ship's wheel. It's an enormous piece that doubles as part of an alternate display base. They've perfected the weathered texturing, and the thing can actually spin. Most of the other accessories make up Captain Sparrow's attire (guns, actual metal sword, compass...his mom's shrunken head).
Looking ahead to the remainder of our 2012 reviews, I am going to be hard-pressed to find a sixth-scale piece more deserving of our “Toy of the Year”moniker. In their Captain Jack Sparrow sixth-scale collectible, Hot Toys has produced one of the most realistic toys I have ever seen. If you're a fan of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean films, you should begin saving up your lunch money to purchase this piece.
What is this, you ask? Well, it's a teaser for Turtum Micci Series 3. But there's also that little retro-styled Mickey Mouse that can be seen in these two photos. So, do Erick Scarecrow and ESC-Toy have a little something special up their collective sleeves? It sort of sounds that way.
