2006 Toy Fair: Wheaty Wheat

Wheaty Wheat had a truckload of new designs and prototypes on hand for Toy Fair 2006.  This is the second straight year I have come away from their booth overwhelmed.

Chris Lee’s Urbanites were on display for those who did not see them at SDCC.  There is the giant orange Mellow (with his Jell-O), Cleubus the radish farmer, the Beatnik Brother and Polly & Wog.

Series 2 of the MAD*L line was being shown off.  There are six different designs (with the Save Huck version also being shown).  Also, check out the poster for the MAD*L Minis. 12 designers, 2 inches tall and blind-boxed.  I know I see a Shawnimal one.  The first in MAD’s line of Clownies was also being shown.

We previously saw glimpses of Sket’s Buckeye Rot, but it’s even more impressive in person.  It really leaves Eggster in the dust.  Buckeye has two removable knives that fit into the body and hands.  And the case is going to be wild, it a wooden, crate like box.

P1010622

Chronic Fatigue’s Mixy and Joe should be on their way soon.

P1010612

Brandt Peters figures might do what the Ledbetter’s did for Wheaty Wheat last year.  These figures should be hot!  The Boiler is just that...a fiery boiler.  He includes a cool little oilcan.  Ink Slinger No. 5 might be my favorite new figure from Toy Fair.  It’s a tattoo artist who is an octopus.  He can be removed from his stool as well.

P1010618

The Tragnark figure is Cait: The Alchemist.  (Cait is a male by the way)  His little bird friend is Bungee (I believe) and there are plans for the bird to come in variants.  This figure will also be packaged with a 3 minute long DVD animation that sounds very cool.

P1010703

DKE Toys is Dov Kelemer’s distribution company.  Anyone in the business knows that Dov is a great guy, and it was nice to see him and his wife showing off their great new setup.  DKE had a bunch of new products on display.  Check out El Panda, Blow Up Dolls…and my favorite…Fafi’s Irina from NTF.  They will also be distributing the Broken Heart Robot and a new line of Halfsies.

2006 Toy Fair: mimoco

P1010687

The folks at mimoco, creators of mimobots, introduced a brand-spanking new design at Toy Fair 2006.  They are teaming up with TADO and the folks at Flying Cat for their latest artist series lines.  Hero, by TADO, might be the most colorful mimobot yet!  Evan at mimoco has some great stuff on the horizon...look for cool designs in the future.  And if you’re not familiar with this line, remember that these are also USB flash drives loaded with cool artist content (and packed full of storage).

2006 Toy Fair: Kuma Central

P1010731

I’ve been aware of Kuma Central for some time now.  They create cute little – theme based - plush and vinyl bears.  (Kuma is Japanese for bear)  As you can see below: Love, Ninja, Kuma and Urban.  Kuma also has a line of smaller, vinyl figures.  These characters are similarly based on a one or two word theme and sell in the $12-14 range.  The larger vinyl figures are still in the “thinking stages”.  The ladies at Kuma Central are looking for input as to how they would sell.  I really like them.  How about you?  I think Maria Sarmiento has created a sweet line.

2006 Toy Fair: Primer

P1010604

The first day of Toy Fair 2006 brought a TON of snow to the New York City area.  Most of the companies were there and had great displays on hand.  The snow didn’t slow them down!  However, the most…umm...interesting…part of the show was listening to William Hung sing YMCA and She Bangs.  It was great entertainment as I say down to eat my $10 hoagie and $4 Diet Coke.

P1010750

(Disclaimer: us Eastern Pennsylvanians use the term Hoagie…you might call it a Hero or Sub)

Thanks to FreeBento.com for sponsoring Toy Fair 2006.

Custom Mechabot

Mfront3

February 14th, at the Showroom NYC, the latest book in the MTV Overground series will be launched.  Its topic is the designer and vinyl toy scene.  There will be a number of one off customs on display.  One of them will be this special Mechabot from Go Hero.  It appears as if they found this Mechabot in deep ocean waters – and it experienced a little bit of rust.

Bespin Han Solo

Solo2

Sideshow Toys launched the pre-order of their 12-inch Bespin Han Solo figure.  Within 2 hours of the exclusive going up on the site, it was already sold out.  The exclusive includes a Mynock.  The regular version is still available, but if the Bespin Han Solo is similar to Sideshow's other 12-inch Star Wars figures...it'll be gone quickly.

Too Many Robots!

Tmrsm2

Walt Disney television animation has given the greenlight to Attaboy's creator driven short cartoon Too Many Robots!  Based on Atta's upcoming kids (and for adult kids) book (published by Baby Tattoo Press).  The 5 minute short has just begun production and will be
airing sometime this summer on the Disney Channel.  The ridiculous art and absurd humor of Attaboy (and the music of a yet to be revealed superstar) will hit TV screens for the first time ever in color (no black and white for you mister).  The short will be chocked full of odd characters, bad dancing, fruit
punch, robots, and of course, toast.

From the Island of Misfit Toys

Misfitcard

Artists:
Elizabeth Berdann (blu), Deborah Brown, Nathan Cabrera,  Jonathan
Callan, Jeroen de Vries, Dan Goodsell, Kelly Heaton, Walter Martin
& Paloma Muñoz, Anne Walsh, and 8 Bit Weapon

Opening: Friday, February 10, 7-10pm Reception for the artists with live music by 8 Bit Weapon, model car dancing performance by Jeroen de Vries (Jevries), and special guests Mr. Toast from The Imaginary World and Santa Claus.

From the Island of Misfit Toys looks at how fine artists are manipulating toys to create sculpture, video, and music that push the boundaries physically, emotionally, or conceptually to address larger themes of consumerism, the surrogate, and death. Through exaggeration of scale, excessive  use of material, and do-it-yourself methods, this exhibition introduces a set of artists who are blurring the lines between creative fields and taking toys to humorous, thoughtful, and poignant places.
