Background

Matt JOnes, who also goes by the name Lunartik, has a thing for tea. Black Tea, Flavored Tea, Green Tea...he likes them all. That coud be why he has released his Lunartik character...in a cup of tea. Matt's Lunartik in a Cup of Tea has been released in a series of blindbox minis, and has recently been given its second series of 6.5” tall vinyl figures.

Thanks to Mr. JOnes, we received the Lunartik Orange Tea: A Tangerine Dream to review for you.

Packaging

Each Lunartik in a Cup of Tea figure comes packaged in a simple white window-front box. The writing on the front is done in silver, and there's a sticker attached to the plastic pane to let you know which colorway you purchased.

On the rear of the box, there are illustrated versions of all of the teas that make up Series 2. And there is also a small plastic pane on the top of the box, which is cut out in the shape of the Lunartik character's head.

Our Opinion

The first Lunartik in a Cup of Tea figure I saw in person was one of the blindbox minis. And while I think that series was one of my favorites of the past several years, Matt JOnes is able to do a lot more with more real estate.

Each vinyl figure includes a cup, saucer, tea stirrer and two sugar cubes. It appears that the cup and saucer could actually be used to serve up your favorite brew...although I wouldn't recommend it.

The Lunartik character takes the same shape and form as his smaller brethren. The sugar cubes aren't your everyday square cubes...they're sculpted to look like they might have been gnawed on. And that little teabag is actually a small booklet that gives some background information about the series and included flavors.

The workmanship and quality on these are above average. I can't pinpoint anything I see that might be construed as poor painting, sculpting, design, or production. However, I might like to see a little more articulation. It's all very impressive since this series was funded and produced by the artist (not a toy company). You're actually seeing a lot more of that, where artists are working directly with the factory to get their designs produced.

I'm also all about attempting to display toys outside of the wife approved “man cave”. And since the Lunartik in a Cup of Tea vinyl has a slight “artsy” and “foodie” look to it...I think I could get away with displaying this in the kitchen or dining room.

Overall, it's a great character idea that's extremely unique. In a designer toy landscape where we see a lot of similar platforms, themes, etc., Matt JOnes and his Lunartik in a Cup of Tea Series stand out as a one-of-a-kind.
