REVIEW: Uglydoll Action Figures Series 3

uglydoll vinyl 3 30

When you hear the word Uglydoll, it's natural to first think about the cuddly soft plush dolls. But in recent years, they've been expanding into tin, vinyl, clothing, etc.

Designer toy collectors are probably well aware of David + Sun-Min's Uglydoll Action Figures. Now on Series 3, the 3” tall vinyl toy line brings some of the most popular Uglydoll characters from plush to plastic.

Similar to Series 2, Pretty Ugly has chosen to not go with a blind box series. Each box has a window front, with a photo of the character on the top lid. Actually, the entire box is decorated in a photograph.

Our Opinion

Of course, Ugydoll “Action Figures” is a little bit of a misnomer. It was joked – by David Horvath – that each figure had an "action feature posable waist line". But most of them do have three points, except for the figures with wings (Ice Bat and Ninja Batty Shogun).

Uglydoll Action Figures Series 3 features six characters (five of them being new). While we've seen Ice-Bat in Series 1 and a Glow-in-the-Dark Ice-Bat series, this version is a little different featuring a new body sculpt. The Kaiju Ice-Bat is also the first Uglydoll Action Figure that never was a plush – it was released as a larger vinyl figure.

We're also seeing a number of recent Uglydoll plush releases, with Babo's Bird, Ket, Nandy Bear, Ninja Batty Shogun and Pointy Max in this series. Like the previous two series, Series 3 is made of of 12 figures. There's an alternate colorway of each of the six characters. And there's a variety of really bright alternate versions.

As a whole, I think this might be the brightest series of the three. As far as likes and dislikes, I'll start off with my lone dislike: Pointy Max's arms. They just look a little awkward. But I think this might have been one of the more difficult characters to transition from plush to vinyl. I like the little bit of spray on the Kaiju Ice-Bat. And I think the character choices are solid, with some plush favorites in there.

OVERALL: Series 3 features a solid lineup of some newer Uglydoll characters. The quality is superb, especially for a 3” line. Even though they were produced in China, the vinyl almost feels like the high quality stuff you get out of Japan. Uglydoll fans should be happy to add these twelve new figures to their collections.

You can pick one up at the following: $10.00 ea. or $120.00 set
Frozen Empire: $114.95 set
Panik's Toy Box: $9.99 ea.
Tainted Visions: $95.95 set

REVIEW: Perseus Tonner Character Figure

tonner perseus 08

The 2010 fantasy film Clash of the Titans might be best known for the cheesy commercial featuring Liam Neeson, as Zeus, shouting “Release the Kacken!”. It's a remake of the 1981 film of the same name, with a storyline that is loosely based on the Greek myth of Perseus.

Tonner Doll Company, which acquired the rights to produce Dressed Tonner Character Figures based on the Clash of the Titans film, has released the main character Perseus, as portrayed by Sam Worthington.

The rectangular box is glossy black with the Clash of the Titans logo near the top. Inside, the figure is secured using ribbons and Styrofoam, with the accessories/clothing packed in plastic bags.

Our Opinion

Unfortunately, the Clash of the Titans film didn't get the types of reviews that the movie studio was looking for. But it made a ton of movie, so moviegoers worldwide must have enjoyed the film a little bit. Does that mean that they'd be interested in collectible figures based on the movie? It's quite possible, since Tonner isn't the first company we've seen release collectibles based on the license.

The Clash of the Titans' Perseus figure is only the second Tonner Character Figure that I can recall having molded hair, rather than wigged or rooted hair. (That other one would be Dick Tracy).

tonner perseus 15

While Tonner's male figures often have a softer, i.e. slightly feminine, look to them, the Perseus TCF bucks that trend. But does the sculpt look like Sam Worthington? I really can't tell. The face/neck looks a little skinny compared to some of the film stills I've seen, and even though Worthington has starred in several action flicks...he's not an easily recognizable actor. And Tonner has applied some interesting paintwork to Perseus' face to mimic shadows/dirt/facial hair.

The Perseus figure features film accurate body armor. It's probably one of the most impressive outfits I've seen Tonner produce. That armor is completely sculpted, with some faux leather details.

tonner perseus 09

The TCF includes a pair of accessories – a sword and a shield. The shield has two loops on it, so you can slide it over the figure's hand. The sword has a rubber loop that you wrap around Perseus' wrist. This is the type of figure where I'd love to see Tonner provide a hand sculpted to hold items. It just sort of looks awkward, having a sword hanging there.

OVERALL: Tonner's Perseus figure is all over the map for me. I'm on the fence about the face sculpt (I'd say it's about a 6/10 as far as likeness). I think they should address the inability to hold accessories. But I feel like Tonner has nailed another outfit with this well-produced armor and faux leather accessories.
