Background

Back in September 2009, we highlighted the artist Miss Monster (otherwise known as Melita Curphy) in our Etsy Wednesday feature. One of her original characters, named Uncle Dapper (the Victorian Gentleman), was featured in a painting. Not only did it catch my eye, but I thought it would lend itself well to being produced as a toy. Fast forward a few months, and we’ve gotten our wish – meet the Uncle Dapper plush.

Our Opinion

The first thing you’ll notice is that the Uncle Dapper painting and the Uncle Dapper plush differ slightly. It’s mainly the mane…err…hair. Rather than having a hairy face, which would have been difficult to show detail, Dapper features a plush face with nostrils, eyes and mouth transfers.

To show off a little bit of monster fur, the plush sports a faux fur beard that extends into muttonchops and eyebrows. Unfortunately for Uncle Dapper…he’s experiencing a case of male pattern baldness. There’s also faux fur on the hands…and his little tail is entirely fur.

Other features include the claws that jut out of his hands and feet. They are made of a shiny, plastic-like fabric. The outfit is a grey, pinstriped suit, white dress shirt, and red ribbon bowtie.

So…what do we think of the Uncle Dapper plush? Well, even though it’s not an exact replica of the painting that we loved so much…I like this plush version. It’s just a fun character. And I might even like the muttonchops/beard a little bit better than what the original character was sporting.

Even though it’s not a top of the line quality plush piece (I believe it was self-financed by the artist…and her first plush toy), it’s not poor quality. And the price ($20 each) is in line with much larger plush runs. If you’re a plush collector – or fan of Melita’s other work – I’d definitely recommend picking up an Uncle Dapper plush.

You can pick one up at the following:

Miss Monster: $20.00 ea.
