big rollin rascal 9

Background

You might say that Scott Tolleson has a knack for drawing cute girls riding three wheeled vehicles. We met his Tricycle Terror character last year with the release of the resin figure based on his illustration. And Scott just released his regular version Big Rollin’ Rascal resin.

The Big Rollin’ Rascal is supercharged on her Big Wheel. With her head down, and pedals a-churning, she’s sporting her number 51 jersey and a serious look of determination.

Our Opinion

Scott Tolleson creates some of my favorite character illustrations. His Tricycle Terror figure is one of my favorite resin pieces in my collection. And when I saw the illustration that his Big Rollin’ Rascal figure would be based on, I felt it was the perfect complement to the little girl on her tricycle.

Being a fan of the artwork, I like to compare the figure sculpt to the original illustration. The drawing has her legs behind the Big Wheel’s handlebars (which also sport tassels in the drawing). And the figure has the rascal wearing socks that aren’t pictured in the original. Other than those places, the sculpt holds fairly well to the original artwork. I love the way her elbows jut out, and the sculpting work on the girl's legs is top notch.

There are some places where the paint differs – no orange around the front wheel and white sneaker soles. And I’d like to see the freckles a little more defined, maybe in a slightly darker paint shade.

The paintwork is somewhat spotty. In some areas – mainly the girl – it’s fine. But there are spots on the Big Wheel, such as the yellow paint on the wheels, that aren’t as tight as they could be. It appears that there are a few pad print spots, such as the #51, gray lines on the wheels, gray highlights on the hair, and the logo on the bottom of the Big Wheel.

There are no problems with the flag falling out (we never had a problem with Tricycle Terror’s flag either). But with this being made of resin, you’ll need to be careful not to snap the flag off. And speaking of resin, it makes sense for this complex figure to be made of resin rather than rotocast vinyl. Of course, there are collectors who won’t buy a figure because it’s resin…but those collectors would be missing out.

While I like the Tricycle Terror girl a little bit more than the Big Rollin’ Rascal girl (it’s probably the pig tails), I’m a fan of the Big Wheel over the tricycle. Overall, it’s another solid release from one of our favorite artists.
