Background

We’ve covered the handmade creations of artist Charles Stephan for some time now. You might remember his popular pig character – Alice Cherry Blossom. Well, a little over a year ago, Stephen started Charles’ Creature Cabinet to publicize and sell some of his other ball jointed resin creations.

We were happy to get our hands on a character from the Noanie Autumn & The Woodlings Faeries story. Yoshi, the Woodling Faerie, is a 9 year old from The Whisper Wood.

Packaging

The figure came packaged in a handmade and hand stained wooden box. (You could still – slightly – smell the stain) It appears that the lid was decorated using wood burn engraving. That lid slides off, and, inside, the figure is protected in bubble wrap and plush stuffing. The outfit is individually bagged inside the box.

Our Opinion

As stated above, we’ve followed the amazing creations of Charles Stephan (from pigs to faeries to hippos) for some time now. So I was pleased to get a hold of one of his limited edition ball jointed resin figures.

If you’re not familiar with the style, the ball-jointed figures from Charles’ Creatures Cabinet are cast in resin. Yoshi almost feels powdery and has a similar powdery look it. A complicated system of stretchy fishing line styled wires keeps the entire body together. Because of that, it’s difficult getting the figure to stand on its own. The front face plate is removable and interchangeable (held in place by a magnet), so it would be possible to fix the wire or even replace the eyes.

The sculpting is very intricate for a resin figure. It’s made up of 18 individually connected pieces. Many of these intricacies are brought out by a slight paint wash (hands, feet and facial elements). The figure just exudes attention to details from the artist and creative team.

The outfit is from Linda Stephan’s Lin Murasaki Design. Linda is the lead outfit designer for Charles’ Creature Cabinet. The ‘Nature’ outfit consists of a slip-on green dress, brown Hobbit-like cloak, green leaves and wooden antlers. My favorite part is the antlers. They add a completely different dynamic to the character.

There were no problems with the figure. However, I did notice that the Yoshi we received did not have eyelashes similar to the online photos.

Unfortunately, this figure has sold out. But the great thing is that Charles’ Creature Cabinet has been expanding their – well – cabinet with a number of new characters and sculpts.
