REVIEW: Maxwell Smart Tonner Character Figure

IMG_7723

Background

Get Smart is the 2008 film based on the 1960’s television show of the same name.  The movie stars the likes of Steve Carell, in the role made famous by Don Adams, as well as Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson and Alan Arkin. It was fairly successful, earning over $130M at the box office. And with the recent release to DVD, it is sure to be viewed by more folks.

While we don’t remember much in the way of Get Smart related toys hitting the marketplace, Tonner Doll Company recently released the first of their Get Smart related Tonner Character Figures – Maxwell Smart.

Packaging

The Maxwell Smart TCF is packaged inside of a white rectangular box that’s emblazoned with the Get Smart movie logo. Inside, the figure is packaged similar to other Tonner products. The piece is ribbon-tied into the box; includes a hair net; has accessories individually bagged; and plastic bags over the figure’s exposed plastic areas.

The Figure

The Maxwell Smart Tonner Character Figure is an authorized likeness of Steve Carell from the Warner Bros. Get Smart film. The piece uses Tonner’s 17” tall Matt O’Neill body sculpt and features approximately 14 points of articulation.

The figure comes dressed in a black and white two-piece suit, white dress shirt, brown tie with white polka dots, silver socks and black loafers.  One of his shoes has a removable sole (it uses Velcro) that reveals a shoe phone. The figure also includes a clear plastic display stand.

The Maxwell Smart TCF is limited to a run of 1,000 pieces.

Our Opinion

When I saw this figure, the first thing I thought was – Michael Scott! Who wouldn’t want a figure based on the quirky boss from The Office? Well, this piece is obviously from Get Smart, but the TCF is still an authentic likeness of Steve Carell…so you’re entitled to customize one if you buy it.

And it’s the fact that it’s supposed to be Steve Carell that the head sculpt is the most important aspect of the piece. So does it look like Carell? From most angles, yes. The only issue is the mouth. Steve Carell has that “mousey” look with a small mouth, and the sculpt (although not the painted lips) gives him a much wider smile than in real life.

And the main accessory is the shoe phone. The actual paper photo of the phone is somewhat covered up by the Velcro that outlines it.  But the removable sole fits onto the bottom perfectly. You wouldn’t know that the right shoe was any different from the left.

The hairstyle is the best it could be considering that the figure uses saran hair rather than having it sculpted. (I like that they went that route) The outfit is a great replica of what the Maxwell Smart character is wearing on the DVD cover. And this might be the best button down white shirt I’ve seen. Most of the time, the collar stands up and just looks “off”. But this works for me. And the tie is an actual tie; it’s not a piece of elastic with a tie on the end. Quality stuff.
